I got my hands on an old Multimeter. Changed the Batteries and was surprised to find to empty but otherwise completely intact 30 year old batteries inside. (The company „Horten“ was bought in 1994, also the price is still in D-Mark and not in Euro)
I know… Every time i turn on my multi meter it’s both … I excpect no less than the display to turn on and I also wonder why. The 9V battery is from 1991
The battery in my multimeter is from 1994. The low battery indicator has been showing, and the screen has been slightly dimmed, for about 3 years. But it keeps on going.

I never understood why these types of batteries are called “baby cells” when they are obviously much bigger then the common AA or AAA cells.

I had to look it up after that zinger. It is from a “baby flashlight” and the name just stuck with C batteries for awhile because that is what they were mostly used for.

And, to answer my own question:
It’s about 14cm/17cm/8cm. It’s quite the beast. The batteries are size C.
An absolute unit! I had a similarly sized Soviet made one when I was a kid but either it was passive or I have not found battery door
If I’m not mistaken, this thing can also measure a capacitor’s capacity. And resistance. I guess that’s why it needs its own power supply.
Old Skool Kool! I had a Simpson I bought used back in the day. The sheer heft of the Bakelite housing screamed quality and a matching price tag to boot. A quick search and you can still buy a Simpson new today, it seems. Just don’t look at the price…
