The amount of times I’ve been in 1st place the whole race, got blue-shelled and then immediately red shelled within sight of the finish line, and ended up in 2nd or 3rd place, has been 3 more than I find acceptable.

Because it happened three times. Still angry.

I have been, lately. On Mario Kart 8 I 3-starred all the 50cc and 100cc and all the original maps of 150cc (Boomerang Cup 150cc is kicking my ass). But getting exactly the combo of Blue Shell, start going, Red Shell, passed 50ft from the finish, then getting second seemed particularly egregious and only happened a few times. It feels like the game Kobayashi-Maru-ing me (you can do everything right but still fail).

Mario Kart deliberately punishes the leading player in order to prevent a runaway leader situation. A much better strategy is to stay on 2nd and 3rd place and then move to 1st place when you see the finish at last lap.

I think that’s why you lag first place…

Someone kept throwing banana peels at me. Rude.

The luck aspect has been somewhat balanced out in recent entries IMO. Being able to “block” certain items by holding a banana/shell behind your kart is a start, and the speaker thing lets you nullify a blue shell if timed right.
