They get a lot of hate, but I absolutely love the Ewoks. Then again i was 6 when Jedi came out.

The real reason, is the battle that took place on the Forest Moon of Endor was originally supposed to happen at the end of ANH, but it did not fit. And Lucas wanted it to be primitive creatures vs the Empire, but by the time ROTJ was filming Wookiees had evolved so much beyond the primitive creatures they were intended to be. So Ewoks were used instead.
so it is back to Vietnam metaphor which is kinda nice
