Why’s everyone so averse to a phone call? You can communicate so much more and so much more quickly
In the office world, I would prefer things in writing. People that want to avoid email and call instead usually want something “off the books”.
Also, what is so hard about writing what you want? I always tell people to email me and all the email says is ‘call me’. You got as far as opening your email client and typing call me, you can just write the thing you want.
You can avoid a lot of back and forth with a call. Sometimes something is easier to explain through voice too, especially if sharing your screen helps.
Yeah we have very different jobs. My job often requires a lot of back and forth. Totally understand wanting to get things in writing though, there are a select few people who I always follow up our phone conversation with an email summary lol
The email summary is just a formalization in case disagreements over what was decided are costly. It’s the efficient middle ground between an email back and forth and a meeting/call.
Because phone calls are more intrusive. I have to stop what I’m doing to properly pay attention and I have to be in a place where I can speak out loud.
But, like, you get to pick when to answer the call or when to call back. You don’t have to answer when you’re in the middle of something else. But not answering a call because then you’d have to “properly pay attention” is certainly indicative of our times lol
I have ADHD, it’s difficult to stop what I’m doing and pay attention to something that I didn’t intend to do.
There’s a social pressure to answering a phone call that a text doesn’t quite have.
I wasn’t arguing with you. I was just answering your question, but clearly people have taken offense to that.
I definitely didn’t take any offense. I also have ADHD and work in a job that involves constant distractions. You don’t need to succumb to social pressure to answer a call unless you think it’s important, you can always call someone back on your schedule. I just know that I get way more accomplished in a 30 second phone call than a 20 minute text exchange
But then they don’t answer, and you’re stuck playing phone tag for hours, all while the lingering threat of another call back at an inopportune time continues to hang over your head.
I hate pulling away from what I’m doing to jump on a call, but I feel like I have to rip off that proverbial bandaid quickly when I get one because it might be worse if I don’t just get it out of the way ASAP.
If it’s my boss who wants to “jump on a call” every 5 minutes because they want me to do their job, or because they’re bored and just want a captive audience, I don’t really have a choice. Also, the junior who will need you to babysit them for an hour because they don’t know anything (not their fault but those calls suck too). And finally, the coworker who is quiet quitting and playing the “how long can I avoid getting fired while I look for a better job” game. I am “happy to jump on a call” with all those people to be forced to do their time sensitive tasks /s. If they were forced to write a coherent email, they might actually find it boring enough to do some of the work themselves.
Yes I’m thinking of at least 5 different people and I thankfully don’t work in that industry anymore.
I work in a non-native language, so for me it’s SO much harder to do this in real time than asynchronously where i have copy/paste available to me if I don’t know a word
I would rather walk several miles to deliver a message in person than make a quick phone call.
