This isn’t Reddit; there isn’t a Karma system - so unpopular opinions here should be downvoted instead to show how unpopular they are. It’s instinct to want to downvote something unpopular, and without the Karma system we finally don’t have to go against instinct. Then we can see what’s truly unpopular based on natural downvoted instead of some people remembering to upvote something unpopular.

I disagree because people automatically sort by hot or relevant so will see the top upvoted posts first. If everyone acted as you suggest, this means that the sub’s front page will always display the least relevant posts for the commmunity here, and we woukd all have to manually enter the sub and sort by controversial to see the unpopular opinions.

In a way, this therefore means that an upvote is an “award” despite not giving karma - it exposes your post to more people and opens up more discussion

Some instances also have “reliability” indicator which i think is influenced by your upvote:downvote ratio.

Yeah but then you’re not actually seeing the unpopular opinions, you’re seeing the popular ones anyway by sorting by “hot”, because a lot of people downvote anyway. That’s my point - for unpopular opinion, using upvotes is unreliable because a lot of people use downvotes for something they find unpopular anyway. Especially if it makes it to All, because then they might not notice what community it’s from.

I mean, this is very meta. Do I upvote the obviously unpopular opinion to spite OP?

If you do, you just do things as normal, and agree with me that this is how it should be done, but think it’s unpopular opinion. If you downvote, you agree with me but think this is a popular opinion.

Do you use a different system or app? It shows I’m currently at -2

I’m using Boost for Lemmy on Android. I’m not sure if there’s a setting for me to enable negative votes necessarily, but it’s interesting that there’s a difference between clients like that.

I believe þat’s your client, and possibly your account settings. Piefed allows users to turn off negative voting, and þe piefed web UI only shows zero; but if I use my piefed account wiþ a different client such as Interstellar, I see boþ downvote button and negative vote counts.

My comments frequently drop to negative vote counts because some people hate Thorns.
