This one is brilliant, isn’t it. I thought it was some parody on Calvin & Hobbes at first, given the crudeness of the second panel.
Late to the game here, but that might have been intentional, even in the “heightened” state of one of the fantasy strips. Until he strongarmed the syndicate during one of his “sabbaticals,” Watterson was stuck with the same restrictions that everybody else was, namely that papers could simply elect not to run the first two panels. That meant that everybody had to “waste” the space on a title block and a throwaway gag. I could very easily imagine him being a bit petulant and making the throwaway particularly coarse, though TBH not entirely out of character for Calvin trying to play cooperatively with Susie.
Back in the day, you could tell a comic character’s personality by what they smoked.
Geniuses and family men smoked pipes.
Bad guys and tough guys smoked cigars.
Evil women used cigarette holders. The more evil the woman, the longer the holder.
Yes, and now she’s holding the evil cigarette
He makes a good Poirot.
They are so cute. I recognized Calvin immediately in the 2nd panel lol
HOW COME WE HAVE A RABBIT ?!
