God I hate these overwrought, click-baity titles; they cheapen the very event that’s important enough to become newsworthy in the first place. Just stop. It’s not a fucking sporting event and treating politics like it’s entertainment, instead of with the gravitas it deserves, is a big part of the reason we’re in this mess.
If you’re reporting the news then fucking report it. Don’t embellish it like it’s a fanfic you couldn’t get published. The Daily Beast is one of the worst offenders, all their titles sound trashy and it smacks of pandering to stupid people, just like Fox news does but for Democrats.
“But here’s the thing: there is a Kentucky constitutional provision that says that I appoint all state officers when there’s a vacancy,” he added. “The question is, does that apply to federal offices? Well, before there was ever a law in Kentucky on how this would work, multiple appointments were made by governors, assumably under that provision.”
TL;DR this isn’t even a “nuclear option”. It’s just “the option that was SOP for a long fucking time”. It’s only in contention now because the fascists want to be the only ones who are allowed to use said SOP, and don’t want their political opponents to have any agency whatsoever.
How is it in contention? Has Beshear even attempted this and been told no by a court or anybody?

Standard conservative ideology: the law binds you, but not me. The law protects me, but not you. I can use the very same rule you’re not allowed to use.
When was Beshear told he wasn’t allowed to use this? By who? Unless a court told him no already he should have done this before even talking about it.
FWIW I do believe that the “Conservative” stance here is the right one, more specifically that it should be the legal policy across every state. There’s no logical justification for a governor having the unilateral right to appoint a successor to an elected office. Off season / special elections are not nearly the logicistical nightmare that they were even 20 years ago.
For every potential Beshear-Massie (read: based) situation, you can have what just happened in SC, where the governor ® replaced Lindsey Graham’s ® seat with… Lindsey Graham’s sister ® because of… reasons.
just fucking do it wtf are you waiting for
We tried doing fuck all and we’re now out of ideas.
Exactly
There has to be a government after Trump.
The Governor is trying not to burn the barn down to get rid of the rats.
Then the barn stands empty, because the rats were a vector for the plague.
Just appoint a replacement, and if Mitch is alive and capable of doing his job, he can do a televised interview with the governor.
Otherwise, he’s a no call no show for work. He’s fired. That’s that.
Otherwise, he’s a no call no show for work. He’s fired.
I’m sorry, but that’s simply not how elected office works
But it is. It’s their job. They aren’t doing it. Their fired.
How things have been done in the past is irrelevant. Moving forward, this is how things will be done. At least in this situation.
If Mitch doesn’t like it, he can file a lawsuit, show up in court, and go thru a trial like everyone else would. If he wins he can have his job back. But he’s fucking dead so it’s a moot point.
It’s their job. They aren’t doing it. Their fired.
A thousand employment law firms absolutely salivating to hear what business you administer, if you’re firing your employees because they landed in the hospital for a month.
Did he have FMLA? Where’s his doctor’s note on if/when he can return? There are currently businesses in the US that don’t even let employees call in when they have the flu.
Politicians are public property. If they break, replace them with a functioning one.
According to who? Sounds made up to me.
Most of our government runs on good faith, and the ‘rules’ don’t actually exist. And if they do, who fucking cares? Andy is in charge of the state. He makes the rules. Period.
The FMLA protects leave for:
- A serious health condition that makes the employee unable to work
You would really like to think that folks in /c/ProgressivePolitics are familiar with the most basic workplace protections afforded sick or injured workers.
Please, if FMLA is the only problem just cut him a check for the wages and the benefits he would’ve been entitled to and fire his ass. Worse things happen to better people all the time in this country.
Fucking should be

GOOD! KEEP threatening! Threaten HARD! But DONT ever do it Because we NEED Maga Votes!
-The DNC!
They also gotta get a committee together to discuss whether or not they’ll be able to still “reach across the aisle” and then conduct 300 polls before they do nothing.
Beshear made the remarks just before McConnell released a so-called “proof of life” photo on Sunday
Article is bullshit for publishing the statement after the facts on the ground changed. Realistically, the governor no longer can take that course of action.
There’s reasonable suspicion about that “proof of life” photo. They should let Beshear talk with McConnell on the phone or (better yet!) on video call.
They’re in the same state, he should just be allowed to visit.
Just drop in, if they won’t let you see him, say he’s dead, and make an appointment.
The ball is then in Moscow mitches court.
McConnell is in DC, where he spends most of his time.
Every article I’ve read says he was at home in Kentucky when he was taken to the hospital.
