Some professions that were traditionally male dominated and were also called “____ man” can be made gender neutral by replacing “man” with “person.”
This does not work for “garbage man.”
Right? I mean I’m not employed by any sort of waste management service and I am certainly a garbage person.

Das Mann means the person and is gender neutral, the English word “man” which comes from it also has a gender neutral sense. It’s more archaic, but it does exist
