After all, why shouldn’t I keep it?
A few years back I threw my stash into the metal recycling, leaving me one or two of each side. Immediately after that I needed one that I knew I had the size for, but couldn’t find it anymore.
Never throwing them away again.
I get that they are poor quality and soft metal, but recycling them in my area is not possible, and my brain stops me from putting it in a landfill. So junk drawer it goes!
How is metal recycling not possible?
I work in the trades. If you throw out the roof hatch Allen key, I will fight you.

Tape it to the bottom of whatever furniture or whatever you just put together!
- Can’t find it when disassembling
- Buy another copy
- Find it once furniture is flipped
- Have 2x of the same tool

Saved these for years but finally started throwing them away. Such a relief lol
I bought a set of Standard/Metric ones that are like 6 inches long. That extra length makes such a difference. I threw my stockpile away after that.
That was my plan; got a set and figured I’d throw out the pile eventually.
But when I tried using only my set keys, it turned out some of my gear has specialty sizes I can’t open/tighten with my set keys.
So now I’m MORE paranoid about hoarding all the Allen keys.
Did you get both an imperial and metric set? I see a lot of each.
Yep; got an SAE/Metric set, but apparently I have some gear that uses really tiny or comically large key sizes.
The free ones they give you are made from the cheapest metal and to poor tolerances. They’re literally the bare minimum to put together whatever they came from. They’ll potentially slip and round off if used heavily. Good quality ones are made from carbon steel and will hold their shape.
In that case you will need one within a month.
Just buy a set, even cheap ones will be better than the crap coming with your furniture.
