According to the Russian government’s statistical agency, their population was about 143.6 million people in 2025, so 1,437,550 casualties is a bit over 1% of their population killed, wounded, or missing in the Ukraine war. Also, those casualties aren’t distributed across age and gender because the troops are men in the 18 to 55 range, so their casualties are closer 4-5% of the relevant sub-population.
To avoid population loss, you need a brith rate of 2 and Russia’s was already about 1.5, so they were shrinking. But they’re actively increasing the shrink rate and simultaneously killing off the people they’d need to reverse the trend. It’s probably not quite as bad among ethnically Russian people because recruiting has disproportionately impacted the east of the country, but it’s still pretty bleak. No wonder they literally stole Ukrainian children.
Russia is also would have lost 654,000 people due to “natural” population change according to official Russian statistics. They currently do not mainly due to Central Asian migrants coming to Russia to earn more money. However the Central Asian economies are doing better and it might well end up with Russia not being as rich in the near future. There also seems to be a trend to look for other destinations as well.
