Move to raise levy on goods made with polysilicon aims to protect domestic US supply chains from China, the major producer

Donald Trump has ordered a new 15% tariff on imported products made of polysilicon, an important ingredient in microchip manufacturing that is primarily produced by China.

The new tariff, which will take effect on 4 December, is aimed at supporting US chip and solar panel supply chains to compete with Beijing on artificial intelligence and energy.

The executive order signed by the president on Thursday evening said: “The plan of action in this proclamation will, among other things, help ensure the commercial viability of United States production of polysilicon and its derivatives that is necessary to meet United States economic and national security requirements.”

100% not the point. No company is gonna fight this when they can pass the cost on to the customer and then later get a refund. It’s open season on consumers.

Don’t forget, once the tariffs get removed the companies also

        1. Get a paycheck from the government taxpayers.
        2. Keep prices the same, tariff baked in price and pocket the difference.

I should have gotten solar on my roof years ago. 😕

I feel the same way. I thought about trying to rush it through before subsidies were getting ripped away last year, but decided against it.

Now this asshole and his fuckery on all levels will probably ruin the market for years and years even after he’s long gone. If anything, this stupid choad should have massively increased the federal subsidies for both wind and solar, to the degree where it’s nearly free, but nooooo, that would make him and the conservatives that support him gay and/feminine, because petroleum is macho.

      We’ll see.

I mean they don’t enforce laws that should, so why wouldn’t they enforce things they shouldn’t?

Subsidies do the thing he actually wants to do. If you want to bring rare earth metal refinement to the U.S… Just do it!

Yeah, but it was illegal last time he did it, so why wouldn’t you just ignore him?

Because now the big companies realize that they can charge the customer the price increase, and Trump will give the company a nice big check for that money in a couple months.

Well they can’t really ignore it since it’s law. They have to sue. And since he’s using a different justification for the tariffs this time they have to.

It’s not law though, as he doesn’t have the power to do that.

No, EOs are just directives for government employees. Only Congress can make laws.

Edit: that being said, these dipshits in the Republican party think they are, and act like they are.

So he wants to raise prices on imported solar panel materials to incentivize production of solar panels in Amerikkka, only to continue forcing oil and gas with the help of his oil barron buddies’ lobbying, and cancel overseas production of renewable wind energy projects.

    Are we great yet?
