Blackout one night up in the mountains. Whole island has gone dark. Next island too. Noticed the majesty of the Milky Way in all it’s glory.

Not a faint shadow, or a slightly bright smear, a glowing bright wide trail extending from horizon to horizon.

I may never see such a thing again. It shook me.

We’ve crippled ourselves as a species by depriving ourselves of the stars.

It’s so sad so many people grow up and maybe even die thinking the nightsky is a few dozen stars.

I feel genuinely sad the modern world has us miss out on something as beautiful as the stars in all their glory, something that always promised wonder longer than we’ve been a sentient species.

For uncountable millenia, the milky way was the standard night time viewing, and we’ve lost it in the last couple centuries :(

Eventually the satellites will bounce off each other and destroy everything up there. I welcome it.

Obviously it wasn’t like that, but it did feel somewhat like a community event.

I work for a small family business and last summer on Friday around 12 a blackout came. The boss was currently on vacation, but he allowed us to use his pool in his nearby house. We also checked, if he hadn’t forgotten some soon to expire food in the fridge and helped him make space for more wine bottles ;) Around 4 pm the power came back and we could go home to a working household. Sometimes we speculate, purely theoretically, how could we repeat such Friday.
