A Texas Democrat is close to Republican Gov. Greg Abbott in the polls. This state lawmaker would be the first Latina governor of Texas and the first Democratic governor since 1995.
Key Points:
- Democratic state Rep. Gina Hinojosa is polling within the margin of error against three-term Republican Gov. Greg Abbott.
- If elected, Hinojosa would be the first Texas Democrat to win the governorship since 1990 and the state’s first-ever Latina governor. Hinojosa’s platform focuses on affordability, public education, and regulating data centers.
- Recent polls show a tightening race, with Hinojosa trailing Abbott by as little as one percentage point.

isn’t it a bit late in the cycle to be writing “meet [candidate]” pieces?
If you want to sell me a “Texans will elect a woman governor” bridge, I ain’t buying.
And if you tell me Ann Richards, I’ll say (a) that was a looooong time ago and (b) she was not Latina.
I’ll hope for it, but 2024 made me reconsider how sexist the voting population is. It’s a significant hurdle.
