I feel that I’m being manipulated. The headlines about this story used to be “Singer gets punished with 74 lashes for violating some religious law”. Now I find out that you can just avoid the lashes by paying a fine. It’s like saying “man faces prison for going 10km/h over the speed limit” because if you don’t pay a fine, you eventually end up in prison.

And even in this story that reveals that you choose between paying a fine and corporal punishment, I feel manipulated. 100 MILLION troman sounds like a lot, but it turns out it’s just 730 bucks.

How incredibly gross and blatant, this consent manufacturing machine. I guess it doesn’t need to be subtle, people only remember headlines. Damage done, mission successful. Maybe war on Iran is good actually. We’ll get it right this time.

A fine? Does the religion carve out exceptions in exchange for money, or do they just disregard the religion in exchange for money?

Either way, it might be interesting if she can (SAFELY) keep doing it at every show and the budget can cover the fines as a business expense. Maybe she could help normalize it a bit. (I assume that would be a good thing, but I admit that I’m pretty ignorant on the topic.)

You’re referring to this part, right?

[…] her lack of a prior criminal record made it legally possible to convert the 74 lashes into a cash fine.

Does a criminal record include cash fines in Iran, or does she continue having no criminal record?

If it’s like pretty much anywhere else, the fine simply replaces the lashes in the sentencing phase. The conviction happened long before that and is separate.

You think this money will go to “old men running the government”? It goes into the state’s budget like all other revenue. This complaint is like complaining speeding fines will go to old men running the government.

Whether you agree or disagree with these fines, it’s indisputable that iran still has a more functional, less corrupt government than say, Egypt or Saudi or Kuwait or Iraq or any number of regional US allies

Are you denying Islam by doctrine isn’t imperialistic?

Yes I deny it. It’s a core part of my belief system and how I was raised and it’s completely uncontroversial among a wide segment of Muslims, if not the vast majority.

Here for example, is a snippet from the translation of the Quran by Leopold Weiss, aka Mohammad Asad:

"This and the following verses lay down unequivocally that only self defence (in the widest sense of the word) makes war permissible for Muslims. Most of the commentators agree in that the expression la ta’tadu signifies, in this context, “do not commit aggression”; while by al-mu’tadin “those who commit aggression” are meant.

The defensive character of a fight “in God’s cause” - that is, in the cause of the ethical principles ordained by God - is, moreover, self-evident in the reference to “those who wage war against you”, and has been still further clarified in 22:39 - “permission [to fight] is given to those against whom war is being wrongfully waged” - which, according to all available Traditions, constitutes the earliest (and therefore fundamental) Qur’anic reference to the question of jihad, or holy war (see Tabari and Ibn Kathir in their commentaries on 22:39).

That this early, fundamental principle of self-defence as the only possible justification of war has been maintained throughout the Qur’an is evident from 60:8, as well as from the concluding sentence of 4:91, both of which belong to a later period than the above verse.

In view of the preceding ordinance, the injunction “slay them wherever you may come upon them” is valid only within the context of hostilities already in progress (Razi), on the understanding that “those who wage war against you” are the aggressors or oppressors (a war of liberation being a war “in God’s cause”).…

This is completely uncontroversial and you can find however many mainstream Muslims you want who believe in these exact words as explained by Weiss. Here is the mainstream Sunni influencer Adnan Ibrahim saying verbatim “the Quran is very very clear that there is no justification for war except in self defence.” This guy is a totally normal sunni conservative. Here is the Grand Mufti of Tripoli making the same point on Saudi tv. He explicitly states that religiously jihad is to be done only in self defence, and that this is different from what he calls “jihad by demand/order” which is fighting for a state. Again: totally regular conservative establishment guy not any kind of radical renegade thinker. This is why far right movements and thinkers in the Islamic world went to such lengths to justify attacks on the US and others by arguing that as democracies the entire population is culpable, and that by stationing military bases in Arab countries and supporting Arab dictators, they have initiated the war. That’s the standard terrorist group argument

imperialism describes a relationship between a country and the rest of the world. the us is imperialist because it subjugates and loots other countries. how it treats its own people on its own territory has nothing to do with whether it is imperialist. iran is not imperialist because it does not subjugate and loot other countries. how it treats its own people on its own territory has nothing to do with whether it is imperialist.

the us is impirialist because there is a us empire. iran is not imperialist because there is no iranian empire.

Empire don’t discriminate. They attack “bad” countries as well as “good” countries. The simple act of defense against aggression does not automatically make someone the paragon of freedom and justice, despite what some “leftists” like to think. Imperialism is not the only “sin” a country can commit. It’s a bully being attacked by a bigger bully.

As far as I can tell online, 100 million Iranian Rials is about $73. And there are ten toman to a rial. So maybe it’s more like $730. But I also found this on a reddit thread in /iran

Officially, 10 Rials is one Toman. But very unofficially, toman can erase as many zeros as you want based on the context. Talking about a bottle of water? 2 toman means 2000 tomans. Talking about something a bit more expensive, like a rug? 20 tomans means 20 000 000 tomans. Talking about something very very expensive like a house? 4 toman means 4 000 000 000 tomans.

Since this is a large number and it’s in the news, that probably doesn’t apply. It sounds more like street vernacular. But it tells me that I really don’t know anything about Iranian money.

She would not have been beaten to death. They split the lashes punishments into as many sessions as needed for the person to survive. So instead of 74 lashes at once (guaranteed death), she’d have to take like 15 lashes 5 times.

Very considerate. I was beginning to think they’re cruel.

The state media would paint her paying the fine as an act of submission to the law and the government, as a “proof” that she is a coward who doesn’t stand by her beliefs.

It’s an attempt to discredit the rebels, basically like a Russian practice of forcing troublemakers to record an “apology” video under the barrel of a gun (just outside of frame).

It’s not (supposed to be) to death; there is some thought put into the affair being survivable. It’s still horrible mind you, but it generally won’t kill you. As for why, one guess I’d make is that it’s a way to make money by imposing the choice of paying a fine or enduring harsh punishment.

        Results inconclusive, further research required

Classic westoid behaviour 👌. Perving on Middle Eastern women in a thread about how the evil patriarchy in Iran subjugates women. It’s true that westoids will never be happy in life until every woman on earth ends up on pornhub. If you can’t google hot pics of ladies in your society then is your society even functional?

Your natural instinct is to perv on the woman and imply you need to see her naked to establish her hotness. And you lack the self awareness to see how your society socialized you into this monkey behaviour where every woman is an attainable piece of ass online. Like an entire society afflicted with Tinder-brain. Objectify, Commodify, rate hotness, see if porn available, move on to the next one.
