Authorities say Fairbarn, who faces two counts of animal cruelty, was drunk at the time of the theft. Now on trial, he told a Nevada court on Friday that he took the bird as a “silly pranky joke” after drinking between 30 and 40 beers.

He denied malicious intent to hurt or kill the flamingo.

Peachy suffered seven to eight missing feathers, broken shafts and blood loss consistent with trauma and needed antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and weeks of pain medicine to recover, the bird’s veterinarian said.

Prosecutors opened the trial last week with surveillance footage, photos and Snapchats showing Fairbarn smiling, laughing and grabbing Peachy by the neck along with his two friends.

The veterinarian said grabbing Peachy by the neck was inappropriate — and could have potentially been fatal.

During his testimony Friday, Fairbarn testified that he grew up on farms, owns dogs and a parrot named Sonny. He said he once rescued an abandoned llama and six ducks.

Then he should know better! Hope Peachy is doing fine now.

Police say Mitchell Fairbarn, a 34-year-old tourist from Ontario, Canada, was caught on surveillance footage in March hopping a fence to get inside the flamingo habitat at the Flamingo Hotel and Casino — and stealing a flamingo named Peachy

Honesty I would be curious as how a drunk guy got the flamingo. He definitely should be brought to justice but the casino also shouldn’t be creating a situation where this is possible to begin with.

A person can only drink about 3L of liquid per day.

So unless each beer was 100ml -> less than a standard beer can, this bullshit on the physics alone. And everyone here claiming “30 is totally doable, and then some” while ignoring the sheer volume is making themselves look like an idiot. And that’s before you consider the effect of the beers from 6am being long gone by the time you’re drinking your 12pm beer. Maybe if you’re drinking teeny tiny beers…

They said he gambled “all day”, so if he started drinking around noon and entered the flamingo enclosure at 5am, I’d say 30-40 beers is possible. You would certainly be absolutely shitfaced though, even with tolerance.

Most American beers tend to be weak, usually under 6% ABV (especially macrobrews, which rarely go above that and usually hover around 4%).

Drinking a 30 pack of a macro is easily doable if you don’t eat anything all day, especially if you’re not pairing it with liquor. An experienced drinker could literally drink American macrobrews all day long and maintain a steady buzz without getting drunk. For me, personally, I can’t get drunk off of beer alone unless it’s above 8-10% ABV. I do 2-4 shots and chase them with 2-3 beers tops. Liquor is just so much stronger here than beer that I don’t need more than that.

4% is the lower end even for macrobrews. Budlight is the lighetest mass produced brew and that’s ~4.2%, but the standard set you’ll find at most generic bars (corona / budweiser / blue moon / lagunitas) at 4.5% / 5% / 5.4% / 6.2% and there are some common brands in the 8%+ range. It’s a weird narrative that American beers are all light, it’s like people think we ONLY drink bud light when in reality the majority of beer drank by Americans are non-light.

Once you get into the 10%+ range you’re not really drinking a “chill and watch the game” type drink anyways. And as you conclude, there are more efficient ways to get there than drinking a 14% lagar.

        Am from New Zealand

30 is totally doable, and then some

        Especially weak 'Murican beers

It takes a hell of a lot to die from alcohol poisoning

It’s actually quite difficult to do, and impossible with beer because you’d have to consume such a huge volume of liquid that you would be vomiting it up before it could be absorbed into your blood stream

Mitchell Fairbarn says he drank between 30 and 40 beers on the night that he stole a flamingo from a Vegas resort

That seems like it’d get you into potentially life-threatening territory.

    EDIT:

    https://www.calculator.net/bac-calculator.html?csex=m&bodyweight=155&bodyweightunit=pound&thour=2&tmin=0&ba=40&bsize=b330&babv=5&wa=&wsize=c150&wabv=12&la=&lsize=s50&labv=40&oa=&osize=250&osizeunit=ml&oabv=8&x=Calculate

Says that 40 beers would be maybe a BAC of about 1.08%.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_alcohol_content

This says that a BAC of 0.4% is “Potentially fatal, may result in a coma or respiratory failure”.

EDIT2: It doesn’t say how long the period was that he drank them over, but going off the BAC calculator above, it wouldn’t make that much difference, as it looks like the decline is linear, and there just couldn’t have been enough hours to dramatically reduce it.
