So I’ve been feeding my ginger bug for four days now, and the first two days it was bubbling nicely, then slowed down.

Is this normal? Does it mean its ready to make ginger beer with?

Update: if anyone stumbles across this, I just kept stirring it and fed it like normal, and today its bubbling a lot! So seems to be okay.

Put your ear to the jar. Is it hissing? Then it is alive and ready. If no sound and no bubbles but it still smells good, keep feeding it until it starts bubbling again. If it’s a new starter, usually better to feed it for a week at least do it gets stable.

I usually use it to make my ginger beer once it is bubbling well, and make a new batch each time. The one time I kept it going longer I ended up with some delicious ginger vinegar (though not good for making ginger beer).

I’ve been trying one that was bubbling well on day 2 and now day 5 looks dead. People suggested there may be too much sugar and it killed the yeast.

I’m going to not feed it for a couple days to see if it recovers.
