It’s great that there won’t be a shutdown, at least for another 6 weeks, but why does this have to be such a stupid game of chicken every damn time?
Something as important as deciding the fate of millions of government employees should not be something the government handles as though they were a university student who forgot a coursework deadline was tomorrow. There doesn’t have to be. But there is because Republicans want it. They love the media circus. They love the leverage to play hardball. They refuse to pass measures that prevent it in the future. And with our current form of government, it would take 60 senate votes to pass something like fixing shutdowns, which aren’t there.
This is the best summary I could come up with:
President Biden on Saturday night signed a stopgap funding bill, avoiding a government shutdown right before the midnight deadline.
There’s plenty of time to pass Government funding bills for the next fiscal year, and I strongly urge Congress to get to work right away.
Biden signing the bill into law caps a chaotic few weeks in Congress, and a day full of surprises in the Capitol.
“Just moments ago on the House floor we passed by overwhelming numbers the ability to keep government open for the next six weeks,” McCarthy said in a press conference in the wake of the vote.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) praised the work of his party to pass the bill.
It ensures military service members are paid, that no federal workers will be furloughed, that food assistance programs will continue uninterrupted, that national parks will remain open and that travel will not be impacted.

Good bot. I always find your summaries helpful getting the points across and saving me some time.
This looks really good for the democrats, let’s hope it carries over to the election. What am I saying, Americans have the memory of goldfish.
The media cycle is a contributor to that. We get shutdown related news thrown at us from every angle 24/7, then next week it’ll be something new and this won’t ever be spoken of again. Then the following week, it’ll be something new again. It’s tiring, honestly.
But the burning question of the day—did Fetterman wear a suit?
