Some of these guys actually dream about moving to china. Like wtf are they trolling or just uneducated?
As long as “socialism-light” is bundled with State- Authoritarianism, still catering to capitalism and frequently using fascist rhetoric taking those countries seriously feels like a joke. Just because they have communist symbols on their flag doesn’t mean there actually trying to create a fairer world.
I’m sure most of them have never been to China.
I spent two weeks there and that was enough; I would never choose to live there. It’s a fairly safe place as a tourist or on a business trip, but there were dozens of red flags in that time as well.
Ironically, though, none of the red flags there had to do with Communism. More about censorship and unnecessary overt shows of military force around every corner. I saw more large arms there than driving through rural America, that’s for sure.
Because China has to do with communism as much as democratic people republic of Korea has to do with democracy.

I saw a half-dozen soldiers with automatic rifles stationed around Tienanmen Square. And (since some “grad” folks prodded me about this in the past) they were nowhere near government buildings. This is the same at several other locations I saw in Beijing. It was less common on Shamien Island, but Shamien is largely businessmen and tourists.
Whenever I saw a money/bank vehicle, there would be soldiers with what appeared to be shotguns. Hard to be sure, but they had the excessive-sized barrels I am only used to seeing in shotguns. I understand “protecting the money” (sounds much more capitalist than commy, just saying), but that was already more excessive than most countries.
To be fair, despite being pro-gun-ownership, I consider the US attitude of police officers carrying firearms at all times to be slightly excessive, so officers carrying the more intimidating weapons usually reserved for assault teams in the US is even more excessive to me. They seem to want very visible weapons for the same reason many of our left hate very visible weapons - the intimidation factor.

Now for the pendantic bit: those are all technically small arms. Large arms would be pretty much weapons that can’t be moved around readily without a truck or wagon. So a heavy machine gun would be a large arm, but the automatic rifles woild still be small arms.
I was the plus-one for my mother adopting a baby back when that was still a thing. A week in Beijing, and a week in Shamien Island. Mostly tour-guided, so I’m sure there’s a lot of good and bad things about China I cannot account for. I was able to corroborate some of my red flags with several young and apolitical Chinese ex-pats years later. As such, I don’t think China is nearly as bad as some people say. And I would still never want to live there.

I get to rage against the slowly changing society in my echo chamber without facing any repercussions, and without having to live in the authoritarian hellscape I so desperately advocate for but never experienced.
This is exactly what it is. When you are teenager and you don’t have a real stake in any particular society, it’s super easy to engage in this kind of hyper-privileged equivocation.
Hospitality dude probably doesn’t even realize that most hotels in China won’t even rent a room to a foreigner, much less hire them to do IT.
The level of delusion and straight up ignorance is hilarious. “I probably wouldn’t go there because I don’t speak Chinese.” But that definitely won’t stop them from enumerating the virtues of Chinese society, I’m guessing.

It’s not a shadow banning as much as it is either a limitation of lemmy or an issue with federation and defederation

Although all actual bans are also shadow. I don’t think there’s not any information to the user unless they stumble upon the modlog

They wouldn’t be able to see content or comments from your instance, but you could see theirs and comment, which other instances that aren’t defederated with you could also see.
