Yeah. Also interesting how god doesn’t get any blame for making her sick.

Never understood that. If God made you sick and it was part of his plan to cure you, then what was the point of making you sick in the first place!?

Just to fuck with you apparently.

Marcus Cole in Babylon 5 had a line that stuck with me:

I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, ‘wouldn’t it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them?’ So now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe.

That’s one of my favorite quotes, so thanks for reminding me. Also, I may have to watch some B5 this weekend.

Smh, that’s because he needed to test you, obviously. Why did an all-knowing god need to test you? Uhh… stop thinking about it and just fear him already.

There are entire libraries full of books written by true believers trying to understand why bad things happen to good people.

I’ve not read any of those books, but I do know that the arguments are more complicated than, he just wants to fuck with us.

The truth is even more complicated, what with life being a confusing mix of cause and effect and random happenstance.none of it having any meaning beyond what we assign it.

Some people would rather write libraries worth of books than confront that truth. Which is sad in a way.

Well, you still experienced pain whilst you were sick, so maybe to punish you. Not that I believe in god at all, just what someone might say.

Yeah I get what you mean. I hear that a lot too.

But remember God has a plan. So does he plan for me to commit sin and thus his punishment is in itself planned, which just seems mean and unnecessary… Or did I go against his plan when I sinned and now has to punish me, and if that is the case he seems quite fallible.

So god is either mean or fallible, which to me seems like a god not worth worshipping.

I am probably just overthinking this and need sleep.

I don’t think you’re overthinking it, if an all powerful and all knowing god exists, I don’t see how it could be good. And I certainly wouldn’t want to worship it.

Same thing with big accidents, the one survivor thanks god for a miraculous rescue but nobody acknowledges the implied “god watched the other 50 people on that bus die brutally and didn’t care”

The implicit assumption is that they must have done something to deserve it. And if that’s not the case, pick any one from the list of other excuses Christians come up with to justify their beliefs in the wake of tragedy:

        • God needed their souls in heaven for a higher purpose.

        • It was their time.

        • God took them as a test of our faith.

        • They’re in a better place now.

        • It was the work of the devil that caused the accident.

        • Now they’re reunited with (other dead loved one).

        • It is all part of god’s plan.

        • God works in mysterious ways.

I’d prefer it if God could keep me out of his “plans” to “test” other people’s faith, thanks very much.

What a shit excuse those are and how insulting to people’s lives and deaths.

The brainwashing is real. Some time ago the Slowmo guys did a collab with a gun guy. The gun guy said he got hurt real bad when his gun exploded some time ago. He made a YouTube vid of the incident and I decided to watch it because I was curious. Normally I don’t really like guns or stuff about guns, because I’m not American, but it seemed like an interesting story.

This guy wasn’t your typical redneck idiot, he came across as really smart. He knew his stuff, was trained well and handled everything with a lot of thought and respect.

He explained why the gun exploded, why he knew there was a risk, but it wasn’t a big risk. And he had a lot of precautions in place in case it went bad. The gun exploded and he was hurt bad, like minutes from death bad.

So the guy explained in great detail what was hurt inside his body (he knows anatomy), what he did to temporarily stabilize himself within seconds. How he could dial 911 when his phone was covered in blood. His dad was there and they had a truck ready to go straight to the hospital, they knew the best route and everything. This guy knew exactly what to do in advance to keep himself alive whilst his dad drove him to the hospital. Once at the hospital he had emergency surgery, explaining in the video what the doctors did and why, what the risks were and how it affected him in the long run.

I was really impressed, this guy knows his stuff, shit went bad and he knew exactly what to do. He prepared well and even in shock remained calm and did as he taught himself, so he could live.

He then switched to indoctrinated southern American mode and praised Jesus and the lord for being alive. I was like dude wtf, thank the people who taught you, thank yourself for being prepared, thank your dad for doing what needed to be done in the moment, thank the doctors etc. But wtf does God have to do with any of that shit?

I really don’t get how someone so smart can be so convinced of a fairytale.

Same thing with Destin Sandlin from Smarter every day. That dude is Smart with a capital S. He knows how the world works and why. But somehow he is also super religious. I really don’t get it, but to each his own I guess.

You said it right there, brainwashing.

Religion literally works off of “believe this with no proof”. When you believe something without evidence, it is hard to refute it because you have no evidence against it either

Yeah, when I learned that Destin was hardcore religious I was shocked. I usually can spot that a mile off having grown up in a hardcore Catholic house. People just confuse me, but hey, I was brainwashed at one point as well so I can’t say I don’t understand how you can be smart and brainwashed.

From your description, it sounds like it could be Matt from Demolition Ranch. He’s down in Texas somewhere and he’s a Large Animal Veterinarian. I’ve never heard this story though.

My aunt once told me that, years ago her mom was rushed to the hospital for an emergency. In the ambulance, on the way to the hospital, her mom actually died but the paramedics were able to bring her back. She lived another 10 years after that. My aunt ended the story by thanking Jesus. It made me so mad that she would thank an imaginary being, instead of the medical professionals that actually saved her moms life.
