God sometimes I really hate people. I’d ask how this lady is so freaking assumptive and stupid, but I remembered that she’s just being reactionary because she hates what he’s talking about.

No. Transphobia, along with any form of bigotry, is against the rules of this community, the instance, and lemmy. Please report any comments that break the rules, which can be found in the sidebar. There’s also a stickied post asking for moderators and requesting feedback on the way the community is managed.

Caveat - maybe there are comments missing because of Defederation with the instance my account is on (still trying to wrap my head around that), but I wonder if it’s the actual post in question here - I don’t know the context, but it seems like the OP of the tweet might be saying that it’s hard to change the current status quo of birth male/female assignment in sport. That could be considered transphobic.

I messaged the commenter above twice to get to the bottom of this but they never responded. I have to assume it’s the post itself, and if that’s the case, I disagree that this is transphobic. I’m the poster and the only mod of this community (although I’ve repeatedly asked for more mods and opened a sticky post to debate any issues that arise, I’ve had no takers) so ultimately I have to make the decision - unless content is against lemmy’s rules, which this is not. It’s a tricky position to be in tbh. My thinking is that while it may not be what we want to hear, while it might not fit seamlessly with the assertion that trans women are women (which I agree with wholeheartedly), there is no insult, no hatred here.

Ross tucker is a legitimate sport scientist and can’t find any controversy about him online. The issue of AMAB athletes (particularly those who went through puberty) competing as women in professional sport is a dicey subject. Even before trans people were better represented in professional sport AFAB athletes were sometimes prevented from competing because their testosterone levels were naturally high, while athletes with genetic abnormalities like Phelps get to compete, despite them having a clear advantage. The whole thing is a mess.

All Ross Tucker is saying is that there hasn’t been remotely enough research yet to come to a scientific consensus, and even with that consensus it will take a monumental shift in the attitudes of athletes, sporting bodies and fans before we come to a widely agreed upon and scientifically sound set of rules for trans athletes. That’s objectively correct.

Banning any discussion at all around this issue, just in case it’s perceived as transphobic is censorship, and that doesn’t help anyone. We shouldn’t shy away from important conversations, as long as people remain civil and do not insult others. To my mind Ross Tucker’s tweet is civil and doesn’t insult anyone, and the vast majority of replies to this post follow suit. Any that haven’t followed the rules have been deleted and the posters have received a first and final warning that they will be banned if they make bigoted comments here again.

I’m very open to discussing whether we should continue to allow posts such as these, but I’d rather it be in a place with more visibility and more people contributing. This community has 2.5k subscribers and this post received just one comment suggesting it was transphobic. I’m more than happy to amend the rules of the community but I think we need at least 0.5% of subscribers to weigh in before I do that. Please feel free to start the conversation in the stickied post, or create your own discussion thread. I appreciate your input 💚

I appreciate the research, and thoughtful nature of your reply. It seems to me you did your due diligence. Like in most of this community’s content, one side is just being lazy.

Thank you! Someone’s currently chewing me out for being a right wing gun nut (I’m British and pretty left wing) who’s no better than Elon musk because I don’t post OC (?) and accusing me of breaking my own rules, so it’s really nice to have a positive interaction! I’m under no allusion that I have all the answers, or that I won’t make mistakes but I’m just one person and I’m trying my best. Thank you for being nice!
