  • Fun puzzle to solve

  • Rewards adaptability

  • Easy to learn but has a lot of depth

  • Cheap

Negatives:

  • Somewhat repetitive

  • Artwork feels dated

The Review

In Targi, you are a leader of the Tuareg tribe, the semi-nomadic people who inhabit the Sahara desert. You compete against a leader of another Tuareg tribe to have the most prosperous tribe. The theme on this game is paper thin. You’re essentially trying to collect resources in order to fill objective cards and add them to your portfolio, which isn’t particularly original. So why does this game stand out from the rest?

Cards are displayed in a 5x5 grid. The “outer” square of the grid are action spots while the “inner” 3x3 grid are resources/objectives. During your turn you will place one of your 3 workers in one of the available action spots. Then your opponent places their worker but they cannot place their worker in the same column or row than your wokers. After both players have placed their 3 workers, you place tribe markers (the cilinders) on the cards where your workers intersect. At the end of the round you get all the resources/objectives where you have cilinders and perform all the actions where you have workers!

I feel like deciding where to place your workers is an extremely interesting decision to make. It’s a tense game because the moment you place your first worker your opponent probably is denied of every card in that column/row. However, if they understand exactly which card you want, they place a worker on that row/column to prevent you from intersecting it! They won’t get that card but now neither will you. It’s a cat & mouse game that rewards your ability to quickly ajust your strategy to the oportunities that present themselves at any time.

The game is very fast, easy to teach and enjoyable to play. It’s a classic game from 2012 and its gameplay continues to feel innovative, different and unique. It’s definitely something I think everyone should at least try once.

Context Information

I don’t have anything on ScorePal :(

Suggested player count: 2 players, since that’s the only choice you have :P

Honorable Mentions

  • Hanamikogi - This is a “I split, you choose” 2 player game with some area majority in the mix. I honestly think this game is fantastic but I have had very low success in introducing it to other people. The game is very quirky, very different than everything I’ve tried. You force players to make hard and unintuitive decisions and I think that turns off some people. “Why would I split these cards, I want them all. How can I have them all?”. Split wisely! I guess the art work and box doesn’t help people get excited about it either.

  • MicroMacro: Crime City - There is some debate about wether this is even game or just an activity but I don’t really care about that. This game is absolutely brilliant. It’s basically a “Where’s Waldo” but with all timelines printed into a single map. Each mission points you to a crime and you have to trace back the map to understand what actually took place there. Where did the victim come from, what were they doing, who looked at them funny? I would put this game as the best 2 player game but it have felt weird for the best 2 player game to be a game where you can play with an infinite number of players. Wouldn’t recommend more than 2 players tho! Get it!

Have you ever played Hive? Super simple to learn 2 player game that is easy to transport since it doesn’t require a board (just any flat surface). It has a surprisingly deep strategic element and also has a few expansions that just add new bug types to add even more layers to gameplay. Highly recommend checking it out!

Our household goes with 7W Duel for 2-player instances, but I need to try out Targi! This is the review to sell me on it

I played 7 wonders duel for the first time and went out and bought my own copy shortly after. What a good game!

I’m a 7 Wonders Duel fan. It’s also a hand-free game (something that can be useful in many couples). Cold War: CIA vs KGB is also a duel, hand-free game that I don’t understand didn’t get more attention (I suspect an error in the rules that has been fixed with erata, but the bad lives).

The words are maybe not the good ones. By “hand-free”, I mean “nothing to keep in your hand”, everything is on the table.

I like patchwork for 2 players. Or if we want to go old school American gaming, Rumikub (although that can play with 4)

…and of course Wingspan and Terraforming Mars play well with 2 players…

…and Pandemic is a good 2 player co-op (but can play with more than 2)

Me and the wife play Pandemic with 4 roles. I find that without some of the roles you just lose two often. And playing a 4 character games with 2 people has lots more going on and is far more enjoyable.

Very interesting. Haven’t played it or seen it in the shelves of other boardgame meetups or sellers. I’ll keep an eye out. Tbh, it’s the first worker placement game in 2p I’ve come across.

My favourite 2p so far has been Mr. Jack, radlands and mage wars

I tried the original Spendor and didn’t enjoy it so it really turned me off the duel version :/

The duel version is a lot of fun, many say its the better game. We enjoy it a lot as a little strategy game

Splendor Duel is great but if you din’t like the regular Splendor gameplay at all then Duel probably wouldn’t work out either.

    1. Splendor
    2. Patchwork Express
    3. Wingspan
    4. 7 Wonders Duel
    5. Love letters
    6. Istanbul
    7. Lords of Waterdeep

Some aren’t specifically 2 player but all work very well with 2 players. Love Pandemic too.

I looove Stratego, it’s Chess 2 for me. Probably the 2 player game I have played the most.

The 2 player version of Azul might be even better than the 4 player one

I’m loving your series of rigorous micro-reviews!

I agree Targi is the best 2 player game I’ve tried.

These are all enjoyable 2 player games that I would also consider for the title(in this order):

    Innovation

    Port Royal

    Jaipur

    Android: Netrunner

    Star Realms

    Morels(aka Fungi)

Targi wins for the pure elegance of its resource selection grid, for including just the right amount of multi-move-calcuable-push-your-luck and for the level of resource blocking being calm enough to not completely destroy someones turn, as there is always a second option to push for.

It really is a well put together game, and I echo the recommendation that everyone should try it at least one time.

I’ve been dying to try Android: Netrunner. I’ve been following Null Signal Games and I think I’ll give it a go with their revised gateway system that is supposed to come out this month.

The System Gateway starter-deck is a great introduction to Netrunner (just need to provide the coins/counters).

I did not know there was an updated version of System Gateway coming out, thanks for that info.

I think they’re only updating the card backs, which apparently have changed over time. Contents will be the same, as far as I know.
