I figured until we figure out an automatic option, a weekly thread is probably ok, especially since Lemmy does a great job at bringing threads back up to the top if they get comments.

I’m a big pro-biking kind of person. I’ve lived in LA for almost twelve years now and haven’t owned a car the entire time. I wouldn’t go quite as far as calling myself anti-car, but I’m absolutely anti-car-brain and think we should be working to make LA as pedestrian-and bike-friendly as we possibly can.

One part of car culture I despise, though, is the recent trend towards super heavy duty double lifted megatrucks that are larger than tanks were in WWII and burn more fuel than God. Sure, there are some places where that kind of vehicle is practical or maybe even necessary, but LA is not one of them.

I work at a parking garage where the vertical clearance is 6’4", and my way to flip those guys a subtle bird is to sell them a parking pass then just let em drive right past and figure out for themselves that they won’t fit

Wow, nice. That’s a long time to be without a car in LA. What part of LA?

And agreed, although I would even argue that there isn’t really any situation where those kinds of huge trucks are practical. Definitely, some situations need a truck, but a lower pickup with a larger bed would be much more useful. Trucks these days are too high, and their beds are too small (a lot of times even smaller than their cabs), which is ridiculous.

DTLA and its surrounding neighborhoods. People always say that you can’t live here without a car, but I moved here from somewhere very rural, where the nearest grocery store was ten miles down a road with no sidewalks and barbed wire right up to the edge of the asphalt. I’ll happily bike 30-45 minutes across the city compared to that, haha

Oh awesome. I was casually considering moving to DTLA a few years ago, but I chickened out lol.

Have you ridden the Regional Connector yet??!

Currently live there now, and I love it. Some things to consider though,

            1. Most towers around here have restaurants, stores or coffee shops on the street level. Good for convenience, but in practice also very hard to keep roaches out. And they do spread to upper levels.

            2. You will need an emergency plan to get to the nearest urgent care that doesnt involve walking, transit, or ambulances (if you try to use ambulances for a cellulitis infection for example, they will tell you to stop wasting their time).

            3. you have a choice of two types of appartments. Interior and exterior facing. Interior is ALWAYS too dark, but they are quiter, warmer and cheaper. Exterior is lighter easier to cool when it get too warm and seems to have fewer roach issues

I saw SIX this weekend not expecting much, but it was amazing. The entire cast and musicians were super talented.

Yeah, it’s about King Henry VIII’s wives, told from their perspective. But it was more of a concert than a musical in my opinion and really showcased the performers’ vocal talent.

Ok this sounds really cool! How much were tickets? Where was it at? It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a musical live

We went all the way to Segerstrom in OC because it was slightly cheaper. Tickets were about $50.

Oh, not bad! I don’t know if I’ll go to OC because I don’t have a car, but you definitely planted a seed in my mind right now

Happy Monday, y’all! If you had a time machine, what’s the first concert you’d go see?

I don’t know about a specific concert, but I’d want to go back to a time when everyone’s not on their phone and just enjoying the experience. Man I sound old and grumpy lol

I went to a Puscifer concert at the Greek last summer and the rule was no phones out or you get kicked out because it’s distracting and takes away from living in the moment. They were very serious and a couple of people did get kicked out after doing it again when warned. During the last song they let us take out phones for pictures. It was great and I hope that concept gains traction.

There are some comedians who have a similar policy, going as far as confiscating everyone’s phones before the show. No one ever calls me, but if I had kids or elderly parents I don’t know if I could tolerate that

I agree with you. People should be able to discreetly check to make sure there’s no emergency happening. Plus, if there was an emergency situation at the venue, that would really suck if no one had a phone to call for help.

Hey man, that’s fair. One of my answers is to go back in time to see the first ever concert just to see what it was like, people may not have even been standing for that one for all I know!

I would want to see someone like No Doubt or The Offspring back when they were little garage bands and finding their sound.

Oh, you know what? Robert Johnson. There’s hardly any recordings and his music is phenomenal. It’s a damned shame he joined the 27 Club.
