    Isn’t Google Chat a feature of Google Messages? It’s what they call RCS for some reason.

        Here’s a bonus for more confusion: in Google Messages if your carrier doesn’t self host RCS, that “Chat” toggle changes to a ”Google Jibe" one 🤦‍♂️

      Messages is sms, MMS, RCS. I’m not sure what chat uses, but it’s a data protocol not tied to the cell network

    I thought they got rid of Google chat and made it only for their paid plans or whatever, I remember uninstalling it and switching to signal when they killed it.

    Also why is the update to make it look the same it did before

      They migrated hangouts to chat and opened chat up to unpaid users

          Well, they did kill hangouts. They never said they were going to kill it and also leave their users without an easy migration path. If anything this is better. They reduced redundant apps. Hangouts did somethings better though
