I’ve been looking between some instances to see how they look to each other and I came across this post/comment.

Source post/comment

off-instance post/comment

As you can see the original comment was deleted by the creator, but is still intact on the off-instance copy. I had presumed that each instance would relay the change, whether be an edit or deleted by creator, but perhaps its either an Admin setting or there was no event to push the change.

Just found it interesting and wouldn’t mind understanding more about how it works.

I think the only thing I personally care about is that it often takes me a few tries to get my grammar correct, so there may be copies of my comments that are poorly written despite having been updated at its source location.

I’m thinking about how many of my comments are all messed up now and floating around, thanks 🥲

If that’s the only reason, why not proofread before you post?

Post, edits and deletes are federated in lemmy.
The Devs have said the issue comes from the internet itself where instances could be some times not reachable when the activity is sent.
There’s also the case where a post hasn’t showed up in all instances or has more comments in one instance than others.

Is there a mechanism for it to be eventually consistent? Like it lives in a “failed messages” queue or something. Or is this more like a fire and forget mechanism?

I sure hope so :[ The idea of a completely-not-consistent social media future feels… bad.

I have noticed the inconsistencies between votes, comments, edits, etc,

I had thought they were decision based, but general bugs might just be it.
