Chicago alt-rock band Smashing Pumpkins third, double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness hits US#1 & is an international top-10.
Following albums Adore (1998) and Machina/The Machines of God (2000) enjoy a similar success … and the band breaks up.
Among their highest US-Alt chart singles are ‘Disarm’(1994) , ‘Bullet with Butterfly Wings’(1995) , ‘1979’(1996) , ‘Tonight, Tonight’(1996) .
Seeing this posted as “classic rock” is making me feel some kind of way. But it’s a fantastic album nontheless.
I don’t care that it technically qualifies I don’t think the moniker “classic rock” fits with any music produced during the 90s, we need a new term for old alt rock.
1979 is one of my favorite songs of all time. I felt nostalgia when it first came out and nostalgia listening to it today. Just an amazing tune.

LOL. I don’t care for most of their stuff, but I guess a lot of people were feeling like rats in cages. (Takeaway: not all classic rock was classy rock.)
