Hi all, long time reddit lurker, first time lemmy poster here.

This is the current state of my tiny homelab. I use it for learning and self hosting some services.

Top to bottom:

IPS modem / router

  • only used as cable modem
  • all other functionality is disabled

HP Elitedesk 705 G3 Mini

  • Proxmox VE Host
  • 4C/4T - 16GB RAM
  • 128GB SSD for Boot
  • 500GB NVME SSD for VMs
  • replaced 2 Pi4 and still gives space for experiments
  • Services: NodeRed, InfluxDB, Grafana, PiHole, Uptime Kuma, Observium

Kobol Helios64

  • ARM-based NAS running Armbian
  • 6C/6T - 4GB RAM
  • 128GB SSD for Boot
  • 3 x 1TB HDD as raid5 for storage
  • Services: personal Nextcloud instance, that I use for file sharing and synchronization between my devices and also as WebDAV target for Joplin

4-Port Firewall-Appliance

  • runs pfSense CE
  • 4C/4T - 4GB RAM
  • 128GB SSD for Boot
  • manages VLANs, DHCP and reverse proxy (HAProxy)

not in picture

  • managed switch: TP-Link TL-SG116E (looking to upgrade to a switch with some 2.5G Ports)
  • UPS: Eaton Ellipse ECO 650

All together this pulls around 60W from the wall. Happy to answer questions.

Thanks! Yes, I would have loved to see more projects from the Kobol team. So far I’m quite happy with this low power NAS.

Are you keeping the kernel updated? I’ve got a helios64 too but I’m stuck on kernel 5.10

Nice setup, how loud is it? Because it looks like it is in the middle of an Living room.

And are you German? Because I’ve only seen people with an FRITZ!Box in Germany and you use Feddit as your home server.

Tanks a lot. With usual ambient sounds and under normal load it is inaudible. When it’s rellay quiet in the room and I copy files, I can hear the disks clicking, but thats ok for me as I sleep in another room.

I live in Germany, indeed. FRITZ!Box ist quiet popular here. Basicly I could choose to get a really crappy router or this box from my ISP. What made me add the pfSense box was the lack of VLANs in the Fritz.

I’m also from Germany and I use Vodafone, I also have a FRITZ!Box. A friend of mine has the basic Vodafone thing and it is trash xD.

And the silent devices are nice, nothing is more annoying than a loud server in a living space.

Looks nice. My biggest worry with installations in living quarters would be dust and lint. I realise this isn’t always an option, but when I moved my installation to a dedicated server room in the basement, the amount of dust in the cases reduced considerably, and what little was left was very fine. A yearly vacuuming is completely sufficient to keep it under control. The amount of lint reduced to zero.

One of my previous main workstations literally died when its CPU fan seized because of dust accumulation.

Just something to keep in mind.
