Recordings of at least five American celebrities — Elijah Wood of the “Lord of the Rings,” Elvis Presley’s ex-wife, Priscilla Presley, “Breaking Bad” actor Dean Norris, “The Office” actor Kate Flannery, “Scrubs” actor John McGinley and System of a Down bassist Shavo Odadjian — appeared to have been purchased on Cameo, where all the celebrities have accounts, and turned into propaganda through strategic video editing.

Sucks that it happened to them, but it’s kind of their fault for being on Cameo at all. Do any of them need the money so badly that they are doing this? Cameo is really fucking stupid and ripe for this sort of abuse.

You wouldn’t think Elijah Woods is struggling for cash, but TV ‘stars’ absolutely need to continue working, as the residual royalties they get are really quite pathetic, especially when you consider the insane amount the studios who own the rights to the series’ they were in get selling them to streaming services.

Iirc this was a big factor in the recent strikes. Residuals were massively slashed for streaming.

Elijah Woods has had a pretty steady career that doesn’t seem driven by money once he’d reached Lord Of The Rings. Like, every project after that really seems to be something he’s either proud of or was excited to jump into at the onset. Him and Daniel Radcliffe are like my main two examples of celebrities who do things because they want to, and they can take their time between roles because of careful financial planning and consistent small projects.

Love me some Radcliffe projects. He’s a weirdo and it’s awesome

People like Rudy Giuliani have cameo accounts too, let’s start getting some anti-Trump and pro-Ukraine videos out of him.

Some just do it to give to charity. It also only takes a couple of minutes for $100-500.

If they’re just doing it for money, I agree that it feels pretty desperate. But I get the impression that a lot of them do Cameo because it’s a fun way for them to interact with fans, and because it’s nice for the fans to be able to get something like that.

Regardless of their reasoning, it sucks that people abuse it. Expected, of course, but it still sucks.

Honestly it’s kinda irrelevant at this point with deepfakes having gotten so good

It’s obviously not since they hired the real people.

This reminds me of the time Kate Mulgrew (cpt. Janeway on Start Trek Voyager) got hired to do a voice over for a documentary trailer only for her to find out later that it was a Flat Earther “documentary”

And System of a Down is one of the few bands where I could actually name the members other than the lead singer. They got spotlighted pretty decently, even though Serj is going to naturally be the face of the band, they put alot of effort into making sure Daron, Shavo, and John were also featured well enough beside him. Especially Shavo, for such an uncommon name to my palette, it became familiar pretty fast.
