Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!
Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!
Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.
So, how’s it going?
I was at Concord Dawn last night…
I’m so fucked. I haven’t stayed up past like, 1am for years. I got home at 4am.
The circadian rhythm part of my brain is so pissed off. I will not achieve anything today.
I love DnB, saw Concord Dawn a few times back in the day. Couldn’t do it now though. I’ve figured out I’m not a nightowl, and being in my late 30s, am lurching towards decrepitness. Also insomnia, I’d be screwed for a few days after. At least I had some good times out all night when I was a youngun.
Hope you had a good night despite the sleep disruption!
Santa Parade today in my small town. Sitting on the back of a truck with my trumpet playing Christmas songs with the brass band. Nice to see a good turn out :)
Wifey and I departed AKL 6:30 in the am. Drove down to Karangahake Gorge. She went for a walk while I rode my MTB to Paeroa along the Hauraki rail trail. Turned around in the town then rode back along the trail to Waihi. Watched the little train leave from the station bound for Waikino. Then rode back to the gorge. Packed the bike up into the car, drove to Waikino Station for an early lunch, then drove back home to arrive at 14h30. Bike washed, me showered, now waiting for wifey to get back from the grocery shopping during which she will acquire for me me a box of beer. Then I’m going to drink some of them while pretending to watch cycling videos on the YouTube thing. I anticipate having to watch some of them more then once because I find I start watching one video then suddenly I realise I’m in the middle of another one. Youtube videos jump around when it’s hot like this.
How do you deal with being out in the sun, especially for several hours in midday?
I’m one of those unsociable cyclists that rides early in the day. Most people I know don’t like waking up early. For me, it’s the best time to ride. I don’t like the heat of the day.
Long sleeve shirt, gloves, +50 sunscreen on the exposed parts of my legs, proper UV polarised sunnies, helmet. I have long hair which protects the back of my neck. It’s just over 2 hours of riding for that trip (for me), so I’m not in the real heart of the day.
Cool, I’ve been experimenting with different sunscreens to find one that works and isn’t annoying. I’m currently using one with zinc in it, which seems to work well, but it makes me look even paler than I already am.
It’s like a helmet. Seems silly until you fall, then it’s a bargain.
Which one are you using?
I’ve been using the Nivea sun spf50, but I’m looking for something more durable to sweat.
I don’t care what I look like.I’m using Invisible Zinc on my body, and a Neutrogena one on my face. Not too happy with the face one though.
I’m not super familiar with the area but spent a bit of time visiting Waihi as a kid, is that the track with the long ex-train tunnel?
Yes. The whole track is just awesome, and the tunnel is over 1km long. Definitely one of my favourite riding areas
Awesome! I had extended family up there who also liked to ride that trail, and I walked a stretch of it with them a few times as well.
Also in case you missed it, post your OC photos to the photo sharing thread: https://lemmy.nz/post/4223998
Just had a home delivery from New World. One of the items we ordered a week ago at a price of $12.99 was delivered at $19.99.
Called up their “help line” to be told that because we had added another item to the order midweek, the original price would have been updated to that days item price.
I bet if the price had gone down it wouldn’t have been changed!!
And they wonder why people hate the duopoly.
No they actually do update the whole “basket” to the day’s prices, it’s a trap to beware of if you’re like me and the basket is mostly things on special. A couple of things might go down but most go up. All the supermarkets do this.
I don’t believe Countdown does this. Have used them for years and never had that happen. We also buy a lot on “special”, including wine and beer where a change like we saw would be obvious.
Normally people schedule delivery for within a week or so of shopping, meaning the same specials are usually still running when you amend your basket.
I had to use Countdown delivery right through all the lockdowns as they were the only supermarket delivering in our area. There was often a much longer wait between order and delivery slot as it would totally book out.
I’m pretty confident this exact phenomenon happened to me several times during that period, to the point where we would check changes to specials before deciding whether to edit the order, but ymmv.
Done some checking and Countdown does not change the item price at the time of delivery, the customers pays the price shown at the time of order. We’ve been using them online for a very long time pre-Covid and have never seen a price rise on a delivered item after placing an order.
I think maybe you don’t understand what I’m saying to you. I totally agree with this and was not disputing it:
does not change the item price at the time of delivery, the customers pays the price shown at the time of order.
This is in their TOS and I don’t think anyone would order from them if they randomly changed prices.
When you amend an order, the time of amendment becomes the time of order, just like at the other supermarkets:
because we had added another item to the order midweek, the original price would have been updated to that days item price.
Makes sense as business practice, otherwise people could schedule for 2 weeks away and wait to add more specials later that do not run concurrently.
I only brought it up because after you had that experience, you thought it only ever revised upwards and I wanted to reassure you it revises downwards as well.
Anyway, it’s all good. Don’t know why I’m defending/explaining Countdown or NW to you. I don’t much like them.
Countdown does actually update prices and also lets you choose new items if what you previously ordered is out of stock when you go to add to an existing order. It gives you a big warning whenever you go to edit an order.
A family member has asked for a stainless steel frying pan for Christmas. I checked out Briscoes but they all have metal handles. Anyone know if they get super hot during cooking or is it not an issue?
We have a metal all-clad pan that I really like. It’s going on 10+ years of service. The handle doesn’t get hot where you are supposed to grip it as long as the burner is the right size for the pan base. I’ve never needed to use a mitt or towel except for taking it out of the oven.
It will get warmer if your flame is coming over the sides when the burner is too big. It’s also hot where it joins the pan, but I don’t grab it there. :)
The heat conduction might depend on the brand, too. All-clad and de buyer are pretty heavy duty pans.
Thanks for the tip! I ended up getting a scanpan one from Briscoes. Hopefully it does the job!
Most of them seem to have thin attachment points and a reasonably thin handle which I presume is to help with heat dissipation so it makes sense it is hotter towards the pan but cool at the other end.
I cook with a metal handled De Buyer pan all the time, it gets a tiny bit warm but not hot. It’ll be hottest with a gas stove, though.
What makes the type of stove matter?
The heat coming off of gas normally goes around the sides of the pan too, heating the handle directly.
Obviously, get them what they want… But is your family member up with the play on how to use stainless steel?
For my money, carbon steel is much easier to use because they’re lighter and once you season them they are far more non-stick than stainless even if you heat the latter properly prior to use. Plus you can pick up carbon steel pans from hospitality suppliers (like TFE here in Hawkes Bay) super cheap. Maybe $30-40 a pan, sometimes less.
Downside is they’re pretty ugly in a function over form kinda way.
edit: these are the brand I got: https://tfe.co.nz/product/pujadas-carbon-steel-frypan/
Stainless steel was specifically requested. They lived with a chef for a long time and are now moving out, but they had a favorite pan of their flatmates.
I was sent a photo but told anything will do because I couldn’t find something similar (it looked pretty similar to the scanpan ones on that website you linked - unfortunately I already ordered).
Ah cool, they’ll know what to expect then.
I’ve got a few, it’s not really an issue in my experience. Moore Wilsons has some good quality cookware, including stainless steel pans.
Great, thanks! It did seem like some of the handles were better designed to reduce heat transfer even if they are metal.
I’ve had a look on the Moore Wilson’s site, there are a couple of options but not that many. I think I’ll probably just get one of the Briscoes ones (when on deep special, of course).
We have some pans with metal handles, and yes they can get too hot to touch bare skin. when heated on high. We use a tea cloth on the handle when that happens.
Hmm, I think they would rather not have to deal with that.
Any idea where else to look other than Briscoes?
Probably Warehouse, or Stevens.
Thanks for the suggestion. Still no luck :(. Starting to think they may just have to deal with a metal handle. There are a bunch of reviews for various ones on the Briscoes website and none mention the handle getting hot so I guess they will see if it happens. The ones that have only low contact via two thin connectors rather than the whole handle may be better as well. I think I’ll grab one of the briscoes ones and I’m sure they will be happy.
There are pan handle covers advertised, not sure if Briscoes have them though. They simply slip on to cover the handle and protect the hand from heat.
Thanks, good to know there’s a backup plan if it becomes an issue.
Mitre-10 sell similar sets to Briscoes, so maybe they’ll have a set with insulated handles.
Thanks for the suggestion, I never would have thought of that! It seems the only stainless steel ones they have are the same as the Briscoes ones, so no luck 🙁
tfe.co.nz stock Scanpan Coppernox stainless which have rubberised handles.
Oh man, I already ordered the Briscoes one yesterday. I’m sure it will be fine.
