Why are there so many of these “Moe” communities? What’s the deal with them? What does it even mean?

Haha! Because I made them all :D

There’s a fitmoe on lemmynsfw that predates mine, but really these are an attempt to start up many of the same style of community I enjoyed on reddit. Communities such as r/fitmoe, r/animemidriff, r/awwnime, r/thighdeology, r/cyberbooty, r/weaponsmoe and many more like them.

On reddit those were all started by various people, but as I’m just one guy I’m taking advantage by networking at least the ones I create.

What they are about, is the sharing of art that fall into different niches, without going for straight up hentai/r34. The reason I didn’t just make one “moe” community is so that you can sub or even block them according to what you like. People also get more invested in more specific communities than more general ones. The top “moe” communities are currently more active than either [email protected] or [email protected].

“Moe” refers to the feeling of attachment towards fictional characters in anime or other media. You can find various definitions of the word, but for the purpose of the communities, in my mind anything neat/sfw enough that I might consider setting it as a wallpaper, qualifies. Moe is also a word used in relation to characters, specifically, which fits as the point is to show off cool character art and design and not for example sci-fi cityscapes in the case of !cybermoe.

Thanks for the explanation! It seems I have to block a new one of these every day. I guess it might help by blocking you first.

That’s only going to block my posts and comments, not all of which are limited to the communities you’re looking to avoid here, meaning you’d be removing all the content I contribute elsewhere from your feed as well. And you’ll still see posts from other users posting to the “moe” communities.

Not to mention that as the communities are on several instances, in order to mod them I’m active across several alts… This is one of them, as I assume you already blocked my main.

I’m not sure what other communities you refer to, I’ve only started two more in the last several months. Unless you are blocking users instead of communities, you should be able to remove anime content from your feed very effectively.

You’ll want to use the list of moe communities in the sidebar of any one of them, to block the communities themselves rather than users posting to them.

The sidebar also links to this post I made listing all the anime communities I could find on lemmy, which you can go through and block, if you like.
