Update: I created an “adoption” community here: [email protected] and there seems to be a similar one on [email protected] already. Hopefully this little project will work out as intended ;)

Original post:

As it is now, not many people seem to be aware that adopting abandoned communities is a thing in the first place, but it is a whole other can of worms to determine WHICH communities might actually be abandoned - and the original owners / creators that left the site months ago surely won’t come back just to put their communities up for adoption.

In order to make the process easier, it might help to “advertise” empty, abandoned, mod-less or otherwise unmoderated communities somewhere so that people who want to contribute to the growth of the Fediverse can then easily pick a candidate to take over. Maybe something like the current “community spotlight” but for communities that are up for adoption?

Pros:

  • New mods can be found easier and faster

  • Might highlight small/niche communities that would otherwise be forgotten

Cons:

  • Might be seen as doxxing(?)

  • Extra work for site admins, unless a regular user wants to run an adoption agency community

Thoughts? Any feedback is welcome, including and especially constructive criticism.

I think it’s a great idea, would probably also help drive more engagement and new people!

I think something like this should be considered. There are too many empty and abandoned communities so either save them or delete them (if they are truly empty of content).

I just created a community and I have no idea where to advertise it.
