In halo 2 the grunts side with the elites while the jackels side with the brutes and the prophets.

Why then in halo 3 are the grunts fighting alongside the brutes and jackels ?

I’ve been jumping between games recently and noticed it and I’m wondering was it ever addressed anywhere ?

Its a gameplay decision because fighting a horde of mostly jackals would get very dull after a while - grunts are simple to defeat and play a comedic role with their dialogue. Having grunts on the player side may have also caused confusion (from the developer’s perspective; i personally think it wouldve been fine) which is something bungie wanted to avoid which is why elites have the ugly green phantoms in h3 (so they are not confused with the regular phantoms)

Lorewise i think its some grunts sided with the elites and some went along with the brutes. They basically went along with whoever was commanding them.

Youll note that the same thing happened to hunters between h2 and h3

That makes sense I guess. Thanks for taking the time to reply. I appreciate it .

I believe the Brutes were given defacto battle control of the covenant and the Elites were slowly starting to be eliminated by the Brute leadership. The elites you encounter in H3 are a breakaway faction.

I think. It’s been a long time since I played those games or read the books.
