i just hope this means people will start buying music again. 1-10 dollars for an album containing 5-20 DRM free music files is probably better value in the long run than spotify’s subscription ever was. and with navidrome, mpd, and its clients, managing them was never easier; plus artists get way more of that profit. everyone wins.

Technology@lemmy.ml•100-channel single-photon detector opens doors to quantum internet
3·2 days agothere’s some quantum versions of algorithms that scale better than the digital version. ranging from quadratic to exponential speedup. Notably very fast at breaking currently widely used encryption. We are only saved by the fact quantum computers don’t have the required processing power to be feasible to use yet.
There’s some encryption algos that are thought to be resistant against quantum attacks but due to the above this isn’t actually proven yet, so currently any “post-quantum encryption” is currently a marketing buzzword with nothing behind it.
It’s a temporary solution. they’re bound to enshittify if they ever come close to spotify’s popularity. or they’ll just get bought out before getting there

So, if Quad9 has admitted that geo blocking is insufficient when it comes to complying with bans, and that they were hit with a fine for doing that previously; how are they actually supposed to not provide services to french users anymore?

sure, but at that point you can just use any arbitrary unit if all you need to do is keep it in a rough ratio. the SI system is useful because it’s standardized, allows for precision, and you can easily convert units. A liter is a decimeter cubed, try doing that with feet and gallons.
but yeah, i agree people would benefit from more straightedge and compass construction skills instead of trying to read the milimeters of a measuring tape that’s not even guaranteed to be straight

11·6 days agoSure, if you want to tinker, Firefox is great; Brave has way better defaults however, it’s convenience. And dear god is convenience important for normies, when even simply installing another browser and importing their data is sometimes too much for them, much less moving from chromium to gecko.

True, true
i am of course, talking in general, but many products can be made more sustainably without sacrificing quality, the method of looking for the most cost-effective way; while good for corporations, it is pretty wasteful.
preferably both policy, and consumer consciousness. starting with anything that’s single use for no reason, society forgot that recycling is third in the hierarchy, below reducing and reusing. wouldn’t it be nice if i could just buy ice cream and put it into a tub that i brought from home instead of having 10 identical, perfectly good plastic tubs that are to be thrown into trash? generally there’s too much plastic wrapping for products.
point being that one, or even 100000 people going full eco conscious would barely make a dent; while placing some barriers over corporations would hopefully reduce emissions substantially without sacrificing consumer convenience.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Linus Torvalds shares his thoughts on Anti-AI coding rules
6·8 days agoagreed, a tool that you have to actively fight to do something well is a garbage tool. it’s like trying to cut some chicken meat with a knife that’s magnetically drawn to living beings. You can make some nice diced chicken with it, but it is way more likely that you’ll slip up and cut off your finger than with an actual knife.
regardless of the original intention, the purpose of generative “AI” is to become a manager that’s out of touch with the actual creation process, so at best no one will know how something works, at worst no one will be able to fix it if it breaks.
it’s one of the “official” ones being supported by lemmy developers, otherwise i don’t really feel the difference. anything is better over the shithole that was reddit.
i guess there’s more marxists on .ml, but i don’t read the instance the comment is from on purpose; that’s irrelevant to me.

atp, if you’re already moving services why not jump to one that guarantees that you will own your media, for free, instead of paying a subscription for something that may actively get worse down the line
