palebluethoughtto AskUSA@discuss.online•Isn't it almost always impossible for someone to refuse someone genuinely asking them what they think or what their opinion on something is?English8·17 days agoCan you rephrase that in English?
palebluethoughtto No Stupid Questions•34% of the US population doesn't vote. Why do polticalitcians cling to the idea that these voters can't be reached?English731·29 days agoWhat do you mean “cling to the idea they can’t be reached?” A huge portion of political spending goes towards trying to increase turnout (of the people likely to vote for you).
DOGE is basically a bunch of 25 year old know-nothings feeding budget spreadsheets and job descriptions to a chatbot and asking what to cut, so…
palebluethoughtto movies@lemm.ee•‘Now You See Me 4’ in the Works as Third Movie Gets Official Title: ‘Now You See Me: Now You Don’t’English3·2 months agoThere was a second one?
A case for what damages? Reddit karma?
palebluethoughtto No Stupid Questions•Why is a two-party system considered democratic?English3·2 months agoThat’s… More or less in agreement with what I said, though? The electoral college certainly doesn’t help matters, but the same principle still holds without it, the EC just adds a second hierarchical level of fptp
palebluethoughtto No Stupid Questions•Why is a two-party system considered democratic?English482·2 months agoIt’s not like the two party system is deliberately chosen or enshrined in law. The field naturally winnows down to two parties because that is basically guaranteed to outcompete every other possibility under a first-past-the-post voting system. You want to fix the two party system, you need to fix our voting system.
palebluethoughtto Linux Mint@lemmy.ml•I have my computer dual booted windows 10 and linux mint 22.1 I just noticed that I can view my secondary windows drive can I safely write to it?English7·2 months agoLike everyone said, it’s fine. They both know how to use the same filesystems, mostly. The only exception is that your Linux install might happily let you mess with or delete essential Windows system files in a way that breaks your install, which Windows would probably try to protect you from. So just, y’know, stay out of system directories
palebluethoughtto Explain Like I'm Five•ELI5 How the WPA under Rosevelt now considered socialism? It employed millions of people and they built some of the most remarkable things. How come this is frowned upon in the US?English8·2 months agoWhy would being a good thing make it not socialism?
palebluethoughtto No Stupid Questions•Is it asshole behavior to hate someone for saying "Hi, how are you?"English17·2 months agoGirl, I can’t keep track of who the “theys” and “girls” are enough to even have any idea what you’re talking about
palebluethoughtto Ask@lemm.ee•The last time I left a company, they announced massive layoffs the next month. When was the last time you were similarly lucky? (Sub-question: is getting laid off with severance good or bad?)English5·2 months agoIsn’t that unlucky? You would probably have gotten severance
palebluethoughtto Ask Lemmy•What would happen if ancient mythologies were privatized in the future in the case of intellectual property, so they would no longer be free to use?English6·3 months agoWell, they can’t, because they’re already in the public domain and nobody is around who can claim them as an original creation.
If you want this to be some pure hypothetical where that doesn’t matter, then… Sure, I guess? That’s what intellectual property is.
palebluethoughtto No Stupid Questions•How is Arcane the series based upon League of Legends, a tower defense game?English42·3 months agoIt’s also not a tower defense game, it’s a moba. There are towers and some defending of them, but you’re not placing and upgrading towers to stop enemies, you’re controlling one individual character from a large roster. The towers play a pretty minor role.

palebluethoughtto No Stupid Questions•If political agendas were released, or summarized, like patch notes would people better understand what they are signed up for? English4·3 months agoThey do. Nobody reads them
I know this is the least important one on there, but I don’t get this thing lately where people talk about “staying hydrated” like it’s some big challenge they have to put effort towards. Like… get thirsty, drink water?
palebluethoughtto No Stupid Questions•Do people REALLY want to buy beautiful land instead of empty land?English162·3 months agoAsking a bunch of random Internet posters on Lemmy, who know nothing about property speculation, land management, investment in general, or especially your country, while providing very few specifics about your plan, is not going to yield useful advice.
palebluethoughtto AskUSA@discuss.online•Is it true that many Americans have German ancestry? And is that something that affects Americans, like do they talk about it etc.?English6·3 months agoSure, it comes up from time to time, if a bit less than e.g. Irish or Italian heritage. Hard to say why, but possibly because most German immigrants settled in the Midwest, which is typically an area you just don’t hear as much about in the broader culture.
The question of identifying as a particular ethnic group vs as “American” is… complicated. For starters, it’s very different for European vs non-European heritage, for a lot of reasons very tied up in both history and modern reality. It’s honestly hard to comment on without saying something that someone else is going to object to. But by and large European ancestry is mostly viewed as a distant thing, just an interesting fact about your family, that maybe brings some unique traditions, or family dynamics/expectations, etc, but which has mostly been long since absorbed into the broader idea of “white American.”
Is this supposed to be some kind of parody to make a point? Not a very good one
