More money than can be spent in a thousand lifetimes, no willpower to work with a trainer and dietician.

Fuck Cars•Rogue London cyclists face ‘sin bin’ under red-light offences crackdownEnglish
9·22 hours agoIt’s from rugby, comparable to the “penalty box” in hockey. It’s a bit cheesy, but no more than calling something a “homerun” or a “hail Mary pass”.
My older sister recommended The New Menopause by Mary Claire Haver.

Ask Lemmy•What are your thoughts on Michael Che's latest stand up special on Netflix?English
51·1 day agoWon’t watch it. I am not the target audience for jokes about banging as many women as he can and barely skirting the edges of pedophilia. I’m so glad there are a greater variety of comedians these days.

4·2 days agoI thought it was good enough I would tune in if there’s a second season.
Loved that it did not go with a Stephen King stuck-on-the-island story line. Thoroughly enjoyed when any actor totally lost control of their Newfoundland accent.

Ask Lemmy•Coffee people of Lemmy, what do you think about non-coffee people?English
5·2 days agoI have so many pregnant coworkers this summer; hot chocolate and caffeine-free tea are now standard items in my office. Quite a few non-pregnant coworkers are taking them too, so happy to be able to meet more preferences. I don’t care one whit about people who don’t drink coffee for whatever reason.
Starbucks wouldn’t have hot chocolate on their menu if it didn’t get ordered. You’re overthinking it. Anyone who would judge you for it is a weirdo.
I solo hike and backpack. I listen to my instincts same as normal daily city life; baseline cautious of all men, pull the plug at any whiff of weird from an individual.
- make sure someone knows where you’re going and has an actionable plan if you don’t check in by x time
- check in at a ranger station if you’re hiking somewhere remote or multi-day
- hiking poles, pocket knife clipped visibly to belt, pepper spray designed for runners within reach
- if backpacking and reaching end of day, you don’t want to feel obligated to stop where other people are if they’re unsafe, make sure you’re prepared to continue in the dark including being familiar with your gear so you can setup in the dark
- InReach Mini or other if you want a comms method and will be out of cell range
- If any man brings up “man or bear” while on the trail, fuckin’ run
- I’ve never carried a gun nor had an interest in it
I’ve had more problems with off-leash dogs than with men. But, y’know, they were off-leash because their owners (always men IME) thought they were above the rules and trail etiquette.
Perfect analogy to “not all men but always a man” - I can’t tell which dog is dangerous until it’s too late so I treat all with baseline caution.
Wait’ll you hear about levers, wedges, incline planes, and screws!

Movies•What are some of your favorite Stephen King film/series adaptations?English
6·4 days agoI’m more in it for the Mike Flanagan of it all, but the brand new Carrie TV show adaptation that came out this month is good so far. I have two episodes to go.
The governor should commute her sentence to life in prison. He’s fucked up so many times and still won’t learn. To let the multi-time botching executions prison commissioner resign instead of firing him… coward. I hope the Tennessee voters remove this idiot at their earliest opportunity. Please, please, please prove me wrong and show this is enough to break through the MAGA cult.

24·5 days agoYeah, I wondered that briefly as well. One reason I didn’t bother to elaborate on the problems, if it is an AI image I’m not going to help train it.

Yup, one more in concurrence. Someone who’s used an electric screwdriver and watched ~10min of YouTube videos would be able to avoid many mistakes showing here.
Are Americans the only non-EU nationals that have to go through EES biometrics when traveling into EU/Schengen zone? I’m pretty sure that’s not the case.
Now, I wouldn’t be surprised if many Americans don’t know we’ve been doing this to non-US nationals visiting the US for years via our US-VISIT program.

Showerthoughts•So many people want to pretend to be artists and musicians using AI, which shows how actually important and wanted the arts in schools is.English
33·7 days agoI’ll take my downvotes now 😞
Jk, I’m on an instance that disables downvotes. Meaning folks have to write coherent comments for me to be aware they think I’m dumb/wrong/eeeeevil.
I could see tinkering with local models being a very satisfying hobby. I’ve always been curious about how accurate they can get on sentiment. E.g., a southern US woman saying “bless your heart” can have implied condescension while other regions it may be more of a straightforward good-faith comment; how and how well does a model get trained on that sort of thing.

Showerthoughts•So many people want to pretend to be artists and musicians using AI, which shows how actually important and wanted the arts in schools is.English
44·7 days agoI respectfully disagree and think hobbies are for enjoyment. If someone makes music for personal enjoyment with the help of AI tools, good for them. If another person finds joy in making “real” music without AI assist, good for them too.

69·7 days agoCreating a piece of art myself is different than enjoying someone else’s creation. There’s a place for both. Lots of respect for, say, professional musicians. They have natural skills and years of hard work that I don’t and no amount of hobbying will get me close to them. But I still find satisfaction in twiddling around on a piano and writing my own tunes. AI helping people enjoy their hobby more is a good application, IMO.
Contrast that with people using it to “side-hustle” and try to scrape up some easy dollars by flooding the world with passionless slop, that’s a different thing.

“eliminating benefit of vegetables”
That’s a pretty wild jump.
