I remember seeing a guide years ago that with the head of a pin or paperclip with a tiny blob of plastic cement (or PVA… it was a long time ago) on it you can leave a perfectly round little hemisphere of it on the surface that dries close to flat but not quite. Perfect rivets.

That’s one of my common techniques. The 2D rivets were purely an artistic exercise.
