The South Coast Air Quality Management District votes to require rail yard owners and operators, including BNSF Railway and Union Pacific Railroad, to aggressively reduce lung-irritating nitrogen-oxide emissions through 2050.
I’m all for replacing the diesel trains with electric ones, but I’m worried this rule is just going to discourage rail usage and put more cargo on trucks. I don’t see anything baked in to prevent that. Hopefully electric trucks will gain popularity and temper that issue if so. I did see a Tesla Semi on the road the other day.
