Star Trek has had Nick Locarno disappear and get replaced by his less-evil multiverse twin Tom Paris as the lead for a show. Jeffrey Combs was practically always covered in face paint or prosthetics, but R. D. McNeil was just straight up sitting there in his normal face.

I don’t think “Paramount didn’t want to write the TNG writers to get paid for every Voyager episode” is a great in-universe explanation, but the solution was to simply don’t explain it at all. Probably the same way Marvel is going to deal with it, maybe lampshade it a little here and there but never do an official explanation.

This made me realize I kind of want to see Lower Decks to a Jeffrey Combs episode. Just throw every character he ever played in there in a holodeck for plot reason and go full Nutty Professor for a bit.

      Badgey’s combs

Cold open to badgey in a study, sipping at a miniature warp core as he reads quietly.

Eventually, badgey will announce he has a story for us, he was combing through some old memory files and found an interesting rhyme in the stories - so he compiled them together to see what would happen.

Badgey clears his throat dramatically, and lets out a shrill dial-up sound as the screen fades over to the tale of the combs - compiled entirely of our favorite multi-faced man and one new Combs character because badgey is a dick.

Or not, I’m just stoned and insomniac, disregard me if you’d like.

Can we crowdsource a script for the episode?

Oh I know combs isn’t our mystical nonsensical existential nightmare, I was just using him as a story point to make the episode not completely out of nowhere because he’s basically Q
