Ohhh yes! Look, I’m not an EV enthusiast but this car might change my mind. I love the way it looks from every angle. Just needs a trapper keeper background to complete the look.

Because you like that or don’t like that?

I thought the Ionic 5 N with fake shifts and engine noise was dumb at first until I realized just how useful it is on track. I’m learning how to race real cars (and sim) and have learned we pay attention to the gear we’re in by turn and where in that gear we’re at not the speed the vehicle is traveling. So there is a purpose.

Thank you for confirming something I’ve suspected, which is that engine noises aren’t just for fun but provide useful feedback on how the car is driving.

But also a lot of fun! My friends almost all disagree, they think a car should be quiet, with their luxury vehicles. I’ll take something loud and visceral every day of the week.

Having done a long road trip in a GTI with a catback, custom intake, and coilovers and it wasn’t nearly as nice as if I’d been in my nice, quiet, smooth Volvo.

But outside of road trips like that I’m with you on wanting something that makes some noise.

Totally agree! My car has a variable exhaust and on the interstate I always put it into quiet mode. The drone just gets to be oppressive after a little while.

until I realized just how useful it is on track

        It is absolutely not useful

I’m learning how to race real cars (and sim) and have learned we pay attention to the gear we’re in by turn and where in that gear we’re at not the speed the vehicle is traveling.

You are learning the wrong way.

        So there is a purpose.

        There isn’t.

The gear youre in and the speed youre going are roughly the same thing, only in a gas car you need to be at a specific point in the powerband to effectively exit the corner. EVs have no such limitation. Just pay attention to the speed.

Have you raced an EV? Because I don’t think you know what you’re talking about.

It’s not about the limitations of the platform.

I’ve raced everything under the sun. Is there actually an argument you’d like to make or just personal attacks?

Your argument is it’s about the platform and it’s not. Learning a track and maintaining speed helps with a limit.

Everyone I’ve talked to, raced with, learned from had all agreed. That’s why they don’t race DCTs or CVTs in “auto” mode. The platform isn’t the issue, it’s the extra layer of control.

And you be fair you haven’t offered an argument other than to say I’m wrong which isn’t an argument but a disagreement. And when you didn’t provide anything in the form of an argument other than to say I’m wrong.

Your argument is it’s about the platform and it’s not.

I’m arguing that you can’t just continue driving a car the way you used to because it’s what you’re used to. Are you gonna jump into a fighter jet and get it in the right gear before going around a corner also?

Learning a track and maintaining speed helps with a limit.

Exactly. Your speed. Not your gear. Your speed shows up on this thing called a speedometer.

That’s why they don’t race DCTs or CVTs in “auto” mode.

                    1. Do you know what a CVT is? Auto mode is the only mode they have…

                    2. No transmission is used in auto mode for reasons I’ve already explained. The engine needs to be in the proper part of the powerband when exiting the corner. Try pulling out of a corner in same and you’re gonna have a tough time. An automatic trans can’t predict the future. As I’ve already explained, EV’s don’t have this limitation. They (typically) only have one gear because they have a functionally-infinite powerband.

it’s the extra layer of control.

                    There’s no such thing.

And you be fair you haven’t offered an argument

I mean you can keep saying that but we both know it’s not true. You haven’t offered any argument other than “it’s what I’m used to” and “some people told me”.
