I’m guessing it might be thermocyclers, I.e. PCR-machines.
You still need some consumables (esp. the proper primers), but the machine is entirely reusable.
However, it is also a fairly basic and it sounds unlikely that Putler had a lack of thermocyclers.
Skepticism is healthy, but it took me less than 30 seems to find an answer. According to Forbes, they were “ID NOW” machines by Abbott Point of Care - so presumably V1 of this device.
I’m assuming it was small bench-top laboratory covid testing instruments for single samples that reported in minutes. These came after large batch sample testing that took many hours. Where I’m from, early in the pandemic, people had to drive to get rested and results were around 24-48 hours later.
So yes, ‘covid testing machines’. Those aren’t the words I’d choose but fair enough for general reporting.
