It’s rare to find a school that would entertain such a thing. I doubt that is the case with those people you’re talking about. Without a leave of absence you’ll likely need to reapply and get new letters of recommendation , etc. Your chances at that point are pretty low.

Not much different than a new applicant, except we know they know how to be a doctoral program member, and do things like be an intern, or RA.
