TBH, I don’t blame her in the least. It’s hard enough for men. I can’t imagine what it must be like for women to endure misogyny on top of what men go through in STEM.

you could argue that men have similar exclusive, lucrative paths that use their strength/athleticism and are also probably statistically similar rates of exclusivity within their sex. Like, not everyone will be a professional footballer just like not every onlyfans model makes livable income.

Not to mention, it’s definitely possible for men to have successful careers in sex work. I expect there are far fewer successful men in sex work, and they probably need to be ok with having a mostly male clientele. But it’s still possible.

The mean earnings for OF is $150/month. Meaning it’s likely there’s a vast majority of people earning $50-100/month, and a vast minority earning $100k/month.

With props, camera, lighting, editing “costuming” etc, you probably lose money doing it.

it isn’t. there’s a lot of male OF models too, although their fans are probably mostly gay men. good news is, unlike performers from before online videos took off, you don’t really have to be “gay for pay”. OF models can get away with doing solo work as well.

I’ve done cursory research on this person, and my understanding is that she claims she will still be teaching science but only wearing sexy tops on. I don’t know how truthful that is but even some Olympic athletes said they are in Only fans but “only being sexy without showing”, in order to supplement their income. I don’t really fault people for this considering the worsening cost of living crisis.

    This is… so inefficient.

She could have become an engineer (or whatever she wants), made videos about it, and made a big difference in many people’s lives, and had whatever personal life she wanted. Instead, she’s producing ‘entertainment’ that’s been replicated a bajillion times.

I an happy for her personally, but this is such a loss to society and a huge ding against the education/work pipeline. I assume she would’ve rather gone into her chosen field if it wasn’t such a miserable grind. If it isn’t ‘worth the hardship’ for someone so brilliant, hardworking, charismatic, and everything to go into STEM, then the system she’s in is completely busted.

If it’s such a loss to society, perhaps something should be done about society’s economic structure and how it partitions rewards. Rather than throwing shade on someone for making an economically advantageous decision.

So I’m reading this debunking, and

Zara smartly leveraged the viral moment to confront the misinformation head-on and promote her YouTube channel, where her actual content lies.

I watched the video and it is very convincing and honestly true on many levels. If you can earn much better money from being your own boss then why would you want to spend time with those assholes at work for less?

I am doing it myself just not as successful and not porn because I like privacy.

There is something strange about her and this whole thing though. I can’t help to think it’s all some kind of stunt or AI person idk. Something is uncanny. Maybe it is just the autism that radiates from her that throws me off and looks like AI.

We live in the times when it is increasingly hard to tell what is real. And also honestly if she was compsci phd and machine learning expert at this level 1 million is nothing vs what potentially she could make right now with that background and shrewd. There’s so much money in this right now, you just don’t drop to do porn when we have second internet revolution for better or worse. Something doesn’t add up.

Just STEM in general. My wife almost left her engineering program because harassment came from the male students as well as the male professors. The handful of women in my engineering school all hung out together and moved as one. Strength in numbers and all that. It was really shit for them. Dudes would just yell “omg girls here???” anytime they walked into like any class. Some profs too.

Google is really shady. So whenever we use the share button on YouTube, they add a code to the end of the link that offers no benefit to us, but allows Google to tie your machine as source who shared the link that others click on. When you look at the link that you posted, you’ll see the letters SI in it and after that, you see the tracker.

To work around this, on desktop, you can copy the link from the address bar, which won’t include the code. Also, Firefox has a feature to copy links without trackers in them, because the practice is pervasive. On mobile, I would recommend just backspacing the junk in hopes of protecting your privacy a tiny bit.

Generally no if we consider it from a financial perspective. Whether or not it’s worth it on an emotional level is very individual

I work in engineering with a masters, and I make more than people with only a bachelors. However, even with the masters pay bump I am unlikely to ever make enough extra money to make up for the financial losses I incurred in getting the graduate degree. It’s only “worth it” financially if you work full time and have your company pay for the degree.

PHDs make about the same amount of money and get about the same positions as someone with an only Masters. You get a PHD because you love studying and research enough to basically give up half of a decade of your life.

I considered getting a PHD until I realized that >50% of the PHD students and graduates I spoke to described it as, “6 years of my life I’ll never get back”.

They said invested, not ‘put in a checking account and drawn down’. Even 5% returns would be 50k annually, which is already more than the median individual income. Actual return on the S&P 500 for the last 25 years has been around 8%.

The thing you may be forgetting to account for is inflation. 50k a year means your drawing the whole profit annually and in 10 or 20 years suddenly 50k is not enough to live on. You need enough in the fund to ensure it’s making more money than you spend so it can grow YoY and make more each year to cover inflation.

Additionally, if you are not working you are paying 100% out of pocket for insurance. One health incident draws your savings below the amount you need to live off of.

Right now they say not to retire at 60 unless you fully own your property and have over a million in your 401k. And that’s accounting for taking a loss to your social security payments past 67 due to early withdrawal and for out of pocket health insurance costs. If you are younger you need even more.

Insurance is a non issue for me, I used 50k USD as an example because it’s pretty close to what I make in CAD.

With 50k I can pay my mortgage and be mortgage free in less than 20 years then I need way less than 50k to live, that’s also something people don’t take into consideration, once you’ve paid you’re debts and you just have to pay for food and taxes you’re left with way more than you’re used to. That’s not even taking into consideration the fact that you pay less taxes on capital gain in a lot of countries, so 50k in salary =/= 50k in capital gains!

We’re in the process of buying a house based on my income alone, we’ll probably have refunded the 250k loan in 15 years tops, probably 12, then we start stacking to retire ASAP.

In some ways I understand it though. I’m sure the pecking order and bragging rights of being one of the only fans people that makes enough money to classify yourself in like the top 5% of income earners in America is probably more thrilling and exciting than having a PhD.

Plus, if she’s going for her PhD she probably already has her master’s degree so it’s not like she gave up academia entirely without getting anything from it.

That being said, I still agree with you. If you were close enough to be in the program you might as well just finish it off. What’s it going to do, stop you from posting your photos on only fans?

I guess it depends on how easy you can be discovered. It’s easy to take off your clothes and get people to pay you to do it, but if you’re in a sea of 1000s of women doing the same thing are you seen?

Same thing with being a YouTuber. Anyone can create a channel. It’s hard to make that channel worth something.

I’m sure “working hard” is way more important than being attractive on a platform where people pay to watch attractive women naked. Oh, wait…

Being attractive is a prerequisite, but not enough. There’s a lot of attractive women, not all of them make 1 mio. on OF.

Being successful anywhere requires hard work. You can be born into money, but you’ll have to work a lot to be a success yourself, not just a nobody with a lot of money coming from those that were successful. You can be born attractive (and that’s subjective anyway, people have a lot of different tastes and kinks) and without hard work, it’ll not be worth anything.

No idea why you are being so patronizing and dismissive. Either you are bitter and lashing out, or you need a little bit more perspective and general empathy, as in capability to see the world not only from your personal point of view, and the capability to process that, too.

This reads like a typical white knight comment one might find on reddit. Lemmy is getting more and more disappointing every day.

If you really believe that a person that makes 1M on OF “deserves” that money and did “hard work” then I don’t really think there’s anything we can discuss.

Someone sounds a little jelly. Seriously though, there are all kinds of people making way more money than that without doing a damn thing to justify a penny of it. The Internet allows niche means of making money simply because you can “sell” your products to thousands or even millions of people–in this case directly from the comfort of her home. There are plenty of other schemes out there that can be similarly lucrative if you’re good at what they want you to do.

Clearly this woman is quite smart to be in that field in the first place, why wouldn’t she take the more lucrative route? Wouldn’t you?

Not jealous at all, just disappointed I guess. I just can’t congratulate a person that had the skill/luck/whatever to get 1M with a minimum effort and they then decide to drop out of a job that could actually contribute something to society to do the banal and functionally useless job full time. It’s incredibly wasteful.

Also no, I wouldn’t go for the “lucrative” route if I already have more than enough money.

Finally, I have several friends that are phd students and you don’t have to be super smart to do that. You do need dedication though. But the same can be said for quite a few lines of work.

OnlyFans is suspicious af considering it’s not blocked in US states with porn bans. Some weird small group of people did a lot of hard work to effectively create a monopoly over porn in some U.S. states, users and creators should beware. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of these onlyfans contents are marketing pieces.

As far as I understand it, the “porn bans” are actually laws that force strict ID requirements, not literally banning porn. (I’m not trying to debate whether they’re effectively porn bans, I’d agree they are.) So sites that are paid access only probably have an easier time proving they don’t let minors in.

Right, shifting the younger populations to the past of least resistance, and helping them form parasocial relationships which may be hard to break. Getting them while they’re young, so to speak.

It’s not suspicious really. They apparently don’t operate in Florida due to those ID laws. It’s more so just that the states have targeted PornHub specifically for their bans to start with and since PH is owned by a conglomerate of sites similar to them, it’s affected many of those sites. Smaller sites remain unaffected often times.

I’m fairly convinced posts like this are sponsored by these platforms to trick young women into joining, as they need an endless supply of new “content” when people get bored of the popular models. That fetish site “Feet Finder” did that a lot, they sponsored tens of thousands of TikTok creators to pretend they got rich selling their feet pictures, when in reality, the people joining the platform were never paid.

My partner was in the top 99% 1% of performers on onlyfans for several years (according to onlyfans’ metrics, which actually are surprisingly accurate since it involves reporting financial information). At the peak she was making about $150/month. It really drove home that the number of people who actually make any substantial amount of money on any platform like this is shockingly low.

So still doing science stuff, but not pursuing a PhD anymore.

The stories my female doctor friend tells me about treatment from male colleagues or female superiors is freaking rage-inducing. But 99% of the time she can’t do shit about it because she’ll be ostracized or risk her job, or in the past risk residency or placements. It suuuucks.

I know many many artists, and none of them would resist an offer to do what they’re passionate about in exchange for lots of money. Or to do what they’re not very passionate about in exchange for lots of money. Or even something they downright hate doing, in exchange for lots of money. Having lots of money means you can invest in those things you are passionate about.

And yet, lots of people choose not to do what they hate for money. Obviously, if you can get paid well for doing what you love is a win-win, but the point of my argument is that a lot of people don’t really care about money, beyond having enough to get by.
