To be serious though, I was in a relationship because “hmm a bass player in a leather jacket”.

Same. Very, very heavily hinted at a used bass guitar for Christmas this year. Put a harmonica on the list as a joke as I was being nagged to put more stuff on the list.

      Now I own a harmonica.

That’s your mistake, you should have included accessories for the guitar so they’d feel guilted into buying it for you.

Or you just get a bunch of accessories and nothing to use then with.

I own my part in this, though I know if I added the amp, cables, maybe a pedal, and some guitar picks, I would have ended up with a nice collection of guitar picks.

Because my wife and kid are assholes who think they are hilarious, which I have encouraged because I am too.

You can get a cheap $80 bass on Amazon. They actually last a long time, i still play mine, and it keeps your tuning forever.

Grab one of those and play for a year. It’s the perfect starter bass.

( I love mine. The guitar shop in my area always asks why i keep using it. By itself it’s got too much “trumpet” sounding, but with a reverb or other pedal i love it)

I mean id probably go all out and get something in the $750 range ish. I’m a musician and I play many instruments, just haven’t gotten to bass yet.

is it possible to change tunings on a bass from say E to Eb without needing to take it into a shop? I say this because it is possible on guitar but I’m not sure if the giant bass string tension will make this process different and more difficult.

Yeah. I tune to Eb when I feel like playing some guns n roses with no issues. I think I like guitar and bass equally. Bass is definitely more fun though.

what kind of bass do you recommend? I mostly play prog rock, rock fusion and metal/power metal

Honestly, whatever looks and feels the best for you. I would, generally, stick to mid range basses. Something that can be properly set up to play comfortably. Your tone will mostly come from your amp/cab so don’t worry about pickups too much.

Oh yeah in your case go for what you want.

You can tune to e flat, sure. The bass is just the four bottom strings of a guitar, with a bigger gauge. EADG is the normal tuning
