From Kathy Penner

Deep in thought or just an itchy moment? This Great Grey Owl, surrounded by a fresh winter wonderland, seems to be pondering the arrival of spring.

I found this slow mo of a Great Horned scratching.

It looks like there is a combination of things that keep them from hurting themselves. The curve of the taking keeps the pokey but away from the skin. It seems to scratch with the back of the curved bit. It seems to use a more side-to-side movement that maintains that safe orientation of the talon. They also get immediate feedback on what is going on, so they can stop if something does hurt.

I assume this was a rhetorical question, but once I found this perfect video, I thought it was very interesting.

Weird, I made a Vimeo account just to share that with you too! I had been looking for a better way to share videos here, so it was on my to do list anyway, so let me know if it still doesn’t work. I get a number of Facebook videos I’d like to share here, but nobody will go there, so I need to rehost them.

I feel bad, cuz sometimes you guys will say things and part of me feels I should let things go, but the other part of me isn’t sure if you want real answers or not. Like people will make jokes on pictures like oh that looks like a fart or burp. It’s kinda funny, but I also think it’s a cool fact that birds cannot physically burp or fart and it feels like a chance to share that, but then I’m stepping on someone’s joke.

I’m too neurotic and improperly socialized to be the host, but no one else is doing it, so this is the price you guys pay! 😅

i forgot to try and see it when i was on the pc lol, but it worked now. also, thanks for going so far just to share a video! i have seen some people use catbox.moe, and it seems to be pretty good (i just tested it and it seems to not even need an account!)

i can’t speak for everyone in this community, but i love to see bird facts, such as the one you just mentioned about them not being able to burp or fart (i do feel like i’ve already been told that but i might just be having some deja vu), i love learning about birds! i actually considered becoming a paleontologist because i wanted to know more about birds and other closely related animals (mostly non-avian dinosaurs, but i also find interesting the pterosaurs and whatever the group including plesiosaurs is called) though i then decided to learn geology instead, since i believe it fits me better.

also even if someone is joking about something, it’s good to say what’s really happening because they (or others) might actually be interested in knowing that!

you’re doing fine as a host. this is one of my favorite communities on lemmy, mostly because i can see cute and/or funny owls with my girlfriend (owls are one her favorite types of birds, if not the favorite!), but also because we can learn some interesting stuff about them :D

speaking of this, i remember that one post about how an owl’s ear looks like, with part of the eye being visible in the ear. it looks cool, and if i remember correctly i spent quite a while reading as much as i could there

          oh i wrote a lot, sorry :D

This question was pretty hard to answer without a video, so I had to figure it out. Everyone here is pretty anti-Facebook, so I pull things off of there to take the privacy hit for everyone else. 😇

You guys really are a great group of people. I’m typically not very confident internally, but you all make me feel comfortable being more of the real me. You seem to recall a lot of great things we’ve looked at here, so I’m glad it’s been sticking with you. You seem to like all animals from the ancient to the present just like I do.

I always try to show my appreciation for all of you, and I hope it comes across sincerely, because I really value the time I get to spend with you all. Always feel free to write as much as you want. I enjoy all you guys share.
