In a grass-roots effort to kick off a national movement, organizers encouraged those opposed to President Trump’s actions on immigration, transgender rights and more to gather at state capitals and city halls.
As a naive European, please someone explain: Why aren’t there more people protesting? I don’t get it. They don’t even state a number here and these pictures look like it’s been just a handful of people.
I’m in Germany and after a conservative democratic party voted with the far right AfD in a ballot in parliament last week, there were mass protests with hundreds of thousands of people all across Germany. There were about 200.000 people in Berlin alone.
Meanwhile I feel like in the US, democracy is currently being replaced by fascism in no time and everybody just kind of watches?
It seems to be very short notice. I know I didn’t hear about it until Sunday or Monday and didn’t see anything for my state until Tuesday, the day before.
It was middle of the day, middle of the week. Many of the people who might be motivated to attend are also motivated to be employed. It was also one and done.
The purpose of the protest seemed… diffuse? “We don’t like Trump/Musk/Trusk!”
Compare with for example the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Planned well in advance to get the word out, specific in its aims, lasted for months.
The corporations in the US have created a situation where people here can’t leave their jobs to protest else they will be fired. If you do not have a job, you do not have health care and most people in america don’t have FU money sitting around to support themselves if they get fired or quit.
Not to mention many companies are looking for an excuse to cut people. They want to replace us with cheaper labor just out of school or from overseas. Shareholder value above all else.
And we need to wake up and realize we are the largest union.
Yes it’s going to hurt, but at least we are making the decision. Ignore the symptoms of cancer and it is going to get worse plus you’ll have fewer options for treatment.

Ok so are there any big protests planned, on a Sunday, with enough time to prepare?
Not that I know of.
