Summary
Donald Trump is upset after King Charles warmly welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at Sandringham, making Trump’s own state visit invitation seem “less special.”
Trump’s allies allegedly asked the British government to intervene, but officials stated the king makes his own decisions.
Relations may also be strained by Trump’s criticism of Canada, where Charles remains head of state.
The U.K. government denied tensions, reaffirming strong U.S.-U.K. ties.
Hahahaha, “The King makes his own decisions…”
In their constitutional system, I’m not believing that for a hot second.
Sandringham is one of the King’s private residences. So who he chooses to invite there and how they are received is up to him.
A state visit is commissioned by the government and the King has no choice in who is invited or how they are received.
The one thing Trumpism should have taught y’all is that all those “technically, yes, it’s literally your government” royal/executive powers are actual powers when someone has the will to act like they believe it themselves and a certain baseline of support.
And the one thing Oliver Cromwell should have taught you all is that when you set clear precedent for what happens when the head of state takes the piss, it doesn’t tend to reoccur.
American politics is built around worshipping the cult of the presidency, and whipping the office holders into shape has been repeatedly rejected on the basis of “harming the dignity of the office”.
One of the most vilified men in English history? That Cromwell? The one people remember as a butcher, but not quite what he was rebelling over?
I’d find that impressive regardless if it wasn’t for the fact that 40% of Brits don’t even know his name.

Just lol @ your second paragraph. The cult is for dead presidents, you silly peasant.
