My pocket was “picked” in New Orleans by a crew of two. One distracted me with a compliment on my fit, which I could not resist because of vanity, while the other tried my back pocket. It was empty though, all my stuff was in my sling which I was wearing on my chest. I had slowly been leading them to the front of a busy shop, maybe 20 feet away. They left empty handed when a bunch of people filed out of the shop and started coming our way.
I’m rarely in big cities these days, but I used to carry an old wallet in my back pocket with nothing but a piece of paper that said “fuck you” in it while I kept my real wallet in my backpack. Naturally enough, I got my backpack stolen.
That is the most common method in New Orleans, it’s been going on for decades now I think. “Nice shoes” means check your surroundings if you’re a tourist.

Lol they got you with the old “Hey, I bet I know where you got those shoes?”
