    Deliberate play is one of the factors that is considered when calling offside if there is a touch of the ball by a defender. The rules currently say if a defender intentionally plays the ball, the attacking player is not considered offside. Right now, there is confusion as to whether wildly kicking at a ball is considered an intentional play on the ball (vs a controlled and intended pass that goes where it wasn’t intended).

        You’d be surprised how many people don’t know about that rule. What isn’t surprising is how ambiguous the wording is.
