I have always (well okay, since I saw it) loved this photograph. Especially the look on his face.

If I understand correctly, and there’s a pretty good chance I don’t, this was the first photograph that didn’t have the subject standing solemnly.

Although adults often did have solemn expressions, there are several photos from the late 19th Century featuring people smiling.
Here’s one of my favourites, from the 1880s.
In case you’re wondering why the background looks so weird, it’s a “hidden mother” photo. The baby’s mum will have been sitting behind them, disguised by the fabric.
Never thought I’d see his baby photo.
