It’s a weird flex, given the direction gay rights has been moving in the United States.

Yeah, it’s not about bragging about our freedom, man. It’s about showing that there is hope. It’s about acknowledging what those countries won’t. That queer people exist and there’s nothing for them to be ashamed of.

It’s about showing that there is hope.

There absolutely is hope. But you’re not going to find it in a Seattle soccer stadium. Not when half the people who can afford tickets work for the companies building the bombs dropped across the Middle East.

That queer people exist and there’s nothing for them to be ashamed of.

There’s a great deal of shame to be had in stadiums draping themselves in SuperPAC advertisements.

Bigger than any rainbow flag, Stronger America as draped these stadiums in hundreds of thousands of dollars in solicitations for militant border control, bigger Pentagon budgets, and a more intrusive surveillance state.

That’s what Iranian and Egyptian viewers are going to see on their TV screens. A firm reminder that they will remain in America’s crosshairs. And all so that some Techbros in Redmond can continue pulling down salaries big enough to enjoy World Cup box seats.
