This was the highlight of the day for me, as both my man Shishi and Hakinofuji picked up losses.
Lots of great matches with some interesting outcomes. I saw a lot of things I hadn’t seen before, and I enjoyed some of the guys beating people they’d never beaten before.
My wife has been watching some of the tournament with me, and she’s at least getting a little into it. She’s starting to learn a few rikishi and making occasional comments on things.
Some of them have long names so I find that nicknames help (and are funny). Some of the ones I use with my friends are just direct translations of the kanji, so even though a lot of people call Takayasu Papa(yasu), I sometimes call him “High Cheap”. Tobizaru is literally Flying Monkey. The yokozuna are Rich Rising Dragon and Big Village, and Kirishima is Foggy Island.
There is a mix of nicknames and also muwashi color recognition for the ones with brighter colors like Ura and Ichiyamamoto. She’s also remembering things like Abi is the face slapping guy.
I’ve got most of the names at this point and trying to get down the face that goes with the name for a few that I don’t know as well.
We’ve got a few gyoji nicknamed at this point also. There’s Strawberry Shortcake that has the very pink outfit and The Goose that has the higher pitched, honky sounding voice.
